Default iPhone comes to the UK - and Germany and France too...

For those of you that have been waiting, the iPhone has finally been announced for the UK market.

It will cost £269 for the only available model - 8gb. It will be exclusively available on the O2 network, on contracts of either £35, £45 or £55 per month.

It is the first time that the iPhone has been announced for sale in a country other than the USA.

It will be on sale from Friday November 9th, at O2, Apple and Carphone Warehouse stores!

The UK tariffs for the iPhone:

£35 a month
200 minutes - 200 texts

£45 a month
600 minutes - 500 texts

£55 a month
1200 minutes - 500 texts

All tariffs come with unlimited data, free access to 7000 Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide and compatibility for the iPhone's Visual Voicemail feature.

iPhone requires a new 18-month contract with O2. Existing O2 customers will have the option of keeping their existing phone number and upgrading their account to work with iPhone while new customers can also simply and easily transfer their current mobile number to O2.

You sure? According to my source today's announcement is UK-only, with the iPhone launching in three more European countries in the first quarter of next year...

Actually it's called i-touch in France and we can't phone with it, it's just the same layout but without phone.

So do I... I'm not sure if I should get an iPod Touch or an iPhone though?

The iPod Touch has 16gb of storage for the same price - with no monthly contract?

You don't have to have a contract you know, pay as you go is just as good.

You do with iPhone.

As I said above, it is only available with £35, £45 or £55-per-month contracts.

That's crap if you have to have a contract. A massive scam, they should give people the option.

It's not exactly a scam. The concept of having mobile phones available on contract but not on "pay-as-you-go" has been around for a while now.

I mean if they're making you pay£269 on top of the over-priced contract

Again, paying for the phone as well as the handset is not a new concept. It's by far not as expensive as some other phones - I once saw a Nokia 8800 handset going for £600 sim-free...

iPhone update:

There was no announcement for France by Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, as expected today.

However, Orange, a network operator in the country, has said that the iPhone would be "distributed in France before Christmas, probably in November", hence nonchalantly confirming that Orange would be the network the iPhone runs on in France.
