How many infractions do you need until you are banned and why is it sometimes a few days and sometimes a week?

I just when through mine and 10 pages of them are for insults

Depends on the severity of the infraction. If it is a build up then the ban is usually less (unless you have lots of active ones in which case the length increases step by step). You can alo be banned directly if the punishment is severe enough in which case it is at the mod teams discretion as to how long for.
