It's usually decided on the Head teachers discretion. Our year was generally badly behaved so they banned Study leave and excluded the worst offenders (but told them it was Study leave - leaving them all shocked when they had exclusion on their education records at college ).

Apparently, no other kid than he would have got away with it, but he came from a 'hard' family, so the headmaster was a bit scared I guess.

We got one week of study leave because the only exams left were Extention Physics and History - both on the Friday. Some people did both, some only one, some neither so they let us have Mon-Thurs off.

Then there were 3 weeks after that where we had no exams so we just left
