Cerys: 'The moment I realised I'd fallen in love with Marc in the jungle'

Singer Cerys Matthews has spoken about the moment she realised she had fallen for former Eastenders actor Marc Bannerman in the I'm A Celebrity... jungle.

Viewers saw the pair flirting outrageously during filming of the reality TV series, despite Bannerman's two-year relationship with actress Sarah Matravers.

In an interview, the former Catatonia singer, 38, claimed that a seemingly innocent goodnight kiss on the cheek by Bannerman as they lay together on her bed in the jungle revealed the couple's true feelings for one another. She said: "It was a loaded kiss, most definitely. That was the thunderbolt moment. We wanted to do more, but it wasn't the right time or place."

Ms Matthews said the pair had hit it off from the start of the programme, but on that occasion, both knew they had overstepped the mark.

"It was a wonderful experience and very romantic," she said. "As we lay there we could hear cicadas, crickets and frogs all around us. It was a magical place and I know we both realised we were feeling something special for each other."

She claimed the moment took both of them by surprise. "Neither of us intended to hurt anybody," she said. "It literally came out of the blue - and it was something we couldn't really stop once we'd spent so much time together."

The singer said that despite Bannerman's failure to turn up to greet her as she left the jungle on Thursday evening - having told her in a note that he would be there if that was her wish - he sent her a letter which she discovered on returning to the Palazzo Versace Hotel after her eviction. She claimed the letter said: "Don't forget I am here for you, any time day or night."

Ms Matthews, who divorced American Seth Riddle shortly before entering I'm A Celebrity..., said she realised as soon as she met Bannerman that he was "kind, generous, warm and loving". She said the pair had much in common, including their love of boxing, cooking, movies and travelling.

On one occasion, the pair sneaked off to the camp's medical station together, where they told one another of their feelings.

The singer, who describes herself as "like a lovestruck teenager", said the pair already have plans to meet when she returns from Australia.

She said she is now looking forward to inviting Bannerman to her home in Wales to meet her family, including her two children, Glenys Pearl, four, and Johnny Jones, two, and enjoying a pizza together.

In a separate interview, Bannerman, 34, also claimed he was already planning a future with Ms Matthews, saying: "I hope to settle down and have children with the right woman. I think Cerys is that woman.

"Love can come from any experience in your life. When it hits you, what can you do? She is sweet, caring and considerate. She sings like an angel and is a very special person to me."

He claimed his relationship with Ms Matravers was already in trouble before he entered the jungle for I'm A Celebrity.

In the interview, Ms Matthews also spoke of her well-publicised battle with drugs, which reached its peak in 2000 when her band, Catatonia, began to unravel. "I was smoking heroin every day and I lost all reality because I never thought I'd be able to get away from the desperation I was feeling," she said.

She described the breakdown of her marriage to Riddle, saying they married too quickly and had different aspirations in life.

Falling in love does happen, just because it's two celebs falling in love with each other don't mean it ent real.
