I hope it’s a different character rather than a sequel to Sandras character

How pointless. The first film was passable but had quite a definitive ending, a sequel would inevitably be a retread that explains far too much.

I'm not against telling the story of the "apocalypse" from someone else's POV if they can make it different enough from the first.

But, yeah, no explanations.
