Spoiler: More than 350 organisations from the Dutch event industry are backing a protest march dubbed “Unmute Us” this Saturday, against current restrictions in place that have essentially wiped out festival season in the Netherlands. Last week, the Dutch government outlined that they were to be continuing with the current restrictions that prevent multi-day festivals with overnight stays until at least September 19. The announcement has sparked outrage however, as they contradict the governments original promise that they could take place again once everyone had been offered the vaccine. Some of the most renowned festivals in Netherlands’ such as A State of Trance Festival, Amsterdam Open Air, DGTL, and Awakenings are just a few selected from hundreds of others that are behind the protest. While these events have faced restrictions, other large scale events in the sports and entertainment have been allowed to go ahead with capacity crowds. This was detailed in a statement/argument on the “Unmute Us” website: Quote:

Protesters are on the ground in several cities for the Unmute Us action. They protest against the corona measures that are hitting the events sector hard. The demonstrators took to the streets in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Groningen, Eindhoven and Nijmegen. In Amsterdam alone, thousands of people have gathered for a walking tour of the city. About 700 people are gathered in Nijmegen. They are demanding that events be allowed to take place at full capacity again from 1 September. According to the organization, about 2000 organizers of festivals and events, event venues and suppliers have joined the protest, including the organizers of Lowlands, DGTL, North Sea Jazz, Best Kept Secret, A State of Trance and Sunda. The action comes after outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced during a press conference last week that discotheques and nightclubs will remain closed until 1 November. Multi-day events will not take place until 20 September anyway. Shortly after Rutte's announcement, the demonstration of the events sector was announced. Protest parade The thousands of protesters in Amsterdam walk through the city, preceded by a truck with music. They carry protest signs with them. On each sign on the back is the request to keep a distance of 1.5 meters. In Nijmegen, people have to stand on a dot on a lawn near the Waalkade. In Groningen, too, a protest parade is sweeping through the city. A few thousand people are gathered in a park in Utrecht, reports RTV Utrecht. According to Omroep West, protesters from The Hague are walking along with the march in Rotterdam, because The Hague does not allow demonstrations. The Ketelhuisplein in Eindhoven is already quite full, reports Omroep Brabant.
