we had 1 day with a big jump in infections, i was expecting it to rise by even more each subsequent day and it hasn't, its settling, its not showing any signs of exponential growth. Why can't people be happy when things appear like they aren't as bad as people were predicting. I think people want a ****ing disaster scenario, i really do

It’s not about “wanting” a disaster scenario, but it is sensible to be prepared for bad scenarios rather than trying to get by on raw optimism.

Maybe it is settling, I’m not saying that I hope you’re wrong, I’m saying that drawing that conclusion from a couple of days worth of data is dumb. We don’t know anything from these numbers, no conclusions can be drawn from them at all, until we have at least a week+ (10 days would probably be a decent measure) to go on.

Believing that a couple of days showing less increase is conclusive of anything tends to just result in people getting an unpleasant shock when there’s a sudden jump later and it turns out that there’s been a flaw in reporting mechanisms or somewhere else.

For example…

We’ve been told repeatedly that some areas have run out of PCR tests. If people (with mild symptoms) aren’t being tested and recover fine after a few days, then they were never added to the numbers.

The important figures - as ever - are hospitalisations and deaths. We’re not going to have an accurate picture on those for at least another week or two.

For my two cents, I think ever hitting 1 million cases a day is extremely unlikely but over 250k/day certainly possible.

Sadly I agree ..

Just have to hope it is indeed milder and the vast majority don’t need hospital treatment or we are completely fecked

if we remember back to when we first re-opened the government at the time said don't be surprised if we hit 100k infections, so they were quite happy to deal with that number of infections per day and have restrictions completely removed. Yes, infections may still rise but its not exponential growth, that means hospitals have more time to deal with things.

I accept the point that the pcr testing could be way out, but that is true all the time surely

Oh I think it could be fairly safely assumed that actual daily positive cases are (always) at least 2x the number of positive tests. Maybe more like 3x. That’s really always been the case, many mild cases and the majority of asymptomatic cases aren’t in the figures.

Not the Same as what France has done:

for UK travellers to slow Omicron spread

the UK without a "compelling" reason
as concern grows in Europe over Britain's Omicron situation.]

Default Coronavirus Outbreak : France Bans UK Visitors

Also someone just said on the radio that little children ( say under 7) aren’t a concern as they RARELY pass on the COVID-19 infection as they only carry a very small viral load ?!??

Is this true or another piece of misinformation?

[COVID news live: Sajid Javid says actual coronavirus infections

Surely if it’s so virulent the whole world would be shutting down to all other countries rather than just the uk

Just wondered why we seem to be doing worse than everyone else ?

Is it simply due to us being a tiny island with a dense ( both meanings ) population ??

"Still, it is worth pointing out that, at every stage, the models used by public health
agencies exaggerated the numbers of infections and of deaths. Indeed, it may well be
that, once again, the lockdown will come into effect only after the peak in new infections
has passed. Why do our leaders keep falling for it?

Because, I’m afraid, all the incentives are stacked one way. No politician ever gets into
trouble for erring on the side of caution. Nor does any public health adviser. No one has
ever been hounded from office for spending too much on test and trace, or for imposing
restrictions that had little effect, or for making predictions that were excessively
alarmist. Make the slightest slip the other way, though, and you’re finished."
