Default How chatty are you in work?

The work self and personal-life self can be quite different (some people are so introverted that they get by in total silence when they’re just doing their thing in private but let rip with verbiage after chit-chat when they are put in those social work situations, because they hardly talk outside the office/hospital) but whether they tally up or they don’t it’s still a thing that people are aware of (making an effort to be a little social while keeping out of excess gossip and drama, and then some). What social vibe do you give across in your workplace?

Default How chatty are you in work?

I am happier with my own company and just listen to the radio via wireless earbuds if the staffroom is very quiet… now if there are two or three colleagues sat near / across from me I will happily join in any conversation/s just to be sociable ( and appear normal) … but I have some kind of ‘cut off’ point at maybe 5 or more people where I simply withdraw into myself and sit listening to the radio / looking at mobile

Fairly chatty!

But only when I'm there, I don't socialise out of hours, I'm only part time, and as I'm supply I can just leave as soon as the kids are all gone

Despite being friends (or at least friendly) some of us have never addressed each other by first name, it's all Mr/Mrs/Miss Whatever, as we rarely speak out of class without kids around, so it's a habit hard to break

I’m fairly chatty myself. On a day-to-day basis I’m fairly reserved and I tend to just say what I need to unless I’m tipsy or something but yeah. Love a bit of office goss., and it doesn’t matter so long as you all have each other’s backs in at least some vague capacity. Obviously confidential information needs to remain 100% confidential to people who have no need to know and I’m very against people breaching those boundaries but there’s a difference between that and casual office gossip that doesn’t leave those four walls.

In my office says very chatty and social and very much part of the banter and
office life. But in my non-office life not all all. When I go to my auctions i arrive,
maybe say hello but after that im at work and i very rarely speak to anyone
and there are folks there who i have known for 20 odd years, i just smile in
acknowledgment and get on with why I am there. I mean pretty much most
folks there blether away all night but its not something I would wish/have interest to do.

Because everyone’s a co-worker to someone. If you happen to befriend someone who just happens to be your co-worker, just go with it and enjoy it.

Our office is very chatty,we do socialise outside of work, we are all a similar age so have kids the same age who are mates etc

My MD is actually now one of my best friends. The only downside is it makes it awkward sometimes if I have a work issue

I don't ho to work to make friends. I go to work to make money.

Pretty much all my work colleagues are a generation or two younger than me, and the ones who are around my age are women. So most are not on my wave length

I chat more with the customers.

What sort of job’s this? Are you saying you’re a teacher?

Ha, it's not the kind of place where we'd BS them about gender.

On the rare occasions I'm actually in-office (once a week at the moment) I am quite chatty but it's a small office so if someone else is on a call/meeting everyone else has to be quiet. If multiple people are on separate calls it can be a bit if a cacophony.

If say I'm a pretty chart "Internet person" so I do encourage Teams to be chatty... I like seeing me random threads/humour/good ol' GIFs on Teams rather than just the boring work stuff.

Believe it or not Alf, you can actually chat with your female colleagues, they're not going to try to jump your bones.

I like my work colleagues...in fact I make sure we all go out for a meal at least twice a year. Too busy at work to really get to know each other properly.

They don't want to talk about Rugby league and sitcoms. They want to talk about the guys the fancy and women's problems. That's not my specialty.

I like to see myself as a reserved but an agreeable ambivert more-times. I can’t stand people being loud and abrasive just for the sake of it but at the same time I’m a bit more open in conversation than the typical introvert and not really that quiet once you get to know me better (it’ll just depend on the environment). But being forced to turn the camera on on Teams (even if it’s a case of having to talk) is a no-no. There’s a way to encourage open engagement and interaction while allowing people to maintain a certain level of privacy when they’re in their personal spaces and zones. I just don’t get why anyone would feel entitled to see the inside of someone’s house and all their pets.

I should say though that I’m talking about big-group meetings (whether they’re on Teams or Zoom). Obviously on a one-to-one basis and stuff you want to see who you’re talking to (I’d rather do stuff like that face-to-face anyway, so there’s definitely not an issue with me showing my face there) but when it’s more than a few people in the group I’d rather just anonymously blend in and speak when I have something I want to say. If you don’t actually need to see me in the comfort of my own space I’d rather you didn’t.

Not sure where you work Alf, everyone where I work is happily partnered up so no one is talking about who they fancy . I would say sitcoms are actually quite a regular topic, too.

...not dusty old Britcoms, to be fair.

Exactly. There’s plenty of neutral, normal stuff to talk about between Welsh rugby and period pains.
