Lightbulb 46,000-year-old prehistoric worms from Ice Age preserved in ice brought back to LIFE!

46,000-year-old prehistoric worms from the Ice Age preserved in permafrost
brought back to life by scientists

A microscopic roundworm – a previously unknown species of nematode – was
extracted from permafrost near the Kolyma River in the northeastern Arctic.
The nematodes were reanimated after being extracted from the frozen
permafrost in Siberia, according to a study published Thursday in the journal
PLOS Genetics.

The undescribed species were named Panagrolaimus kolymaensis by scientists.
Making the reanimation of the ancient roundworm after 46,000 years more
extraordinary is that the typical lifespan of Panagrolaimus kolymaensis is just
one to two months.

[Stone Age worms dug up from the
Siberian permafrost were brought back to
life after 46,000 years in suspended
animation - becoming
the oldest-known creatures to have existed.

The roundworms were discovered by
Russian scientists inside a fossilised squirrel burrow
and a deep glacial deposit near
the Kolyma River in 2018,
but it was unclear what they were,
or how long they had been trapped in the ice.

Now genetic sequencing has shown they
are an entirely new species of nematode
worm which has lain dormant since the
last Ice Age.]
