Save A Fox founder Mikayla Raines dies by suicide after battling mental illness and targeted online harassment.

Mikayla, who was known for her tireless work rescuing and caring for foxes and other exotic animals, had been battling severe mental health conditions including depression, autism, and borderline personality disorder. According to Ethan, despite years of therapy and various medications, she continued to struggle with daily life and emotional regulation.

In his emotional 11-minute statement, Ethan revealed that Mikayla had been the target of a prolonged online harassment campaign. The abuse reportedly came not only from strangers but also from individuals within her personal life and others in the animal rescue community.

“They spread false rumors, and being the sensitive person she was, it deeply affected her,” Ethan said. “She tried for years to push through the pain, but this time it was too much.”

Mikayla is survived by Ethan, their daughter Freya, and the many animals she cared for at Save A Fox’s Minnesota and Florida locations. Ethan has vowed to continue her legacy and the mission of the rescue.

Yep really intense bullying from the sounds of it, and such a beautiful girl with a heart of gold.

Animal rescue communities can become very toxic very fast. Some people join to work out their emotional issues and it shows up in any number of ways. Some go full stalker just based on simple rumors relying on their savior complex so it gets nasty quick. I know enough about it I don't get too terribly involved with rescues directly but I will campaign for a shelter pup every now and then. I did a medical once with rescue backing to help with discounts but raised the funds for care myself.

There is just too much jealousy in this world and always some group of people trying to get someone taken down if they don't like how something is being run. Some of that is legitimate. Like people taking donations to save animals only to dump them into boarding permanently or worse (euthanasia would be more humane). Most is petty drama and the same people who dislike each other interfering with rescues just to be petty. So yeah I would think probably very intense and personal and probably back and forth.. people seem to think they can clear up rumors by responding to all of it, not realizing often it's just people who dislike each other who don't want others to succeed without what they perceive as needed friction to whatever they think needs doing differently.

Anyway, she is also an online creator aka Youtuber, so she probably got the whole kitchen thrown at her and then some on the regular. That's just too much with her other health issues.

…this is extremely sad, I wasn’t aware of her at all…she had mental health struggles through her life, I’m reading…and was on the autism spectrum as well as suffering depression and borderline personality disorder…such a vulnerable person for the cruelty that ‘online’ can be …it really is terrifying, how easily ‘online’ has created bullies and bullying behaviour …and some of those were people she knew/colleagues…?…awful, awful….a very sad story….

…her husband has pledged to continue saving the foxes……
