He was genuinely surprised.
He probably thought he was hated on the outside.

he will have been hearing for weeks how popular Zelah was and how he was going to win and it's hard to ignore that when the house mates actually convinced themselves it was true.

It will be interesting now to see if there is any shift toward being more accommodating to Richard or are they going to dig themselves deeper in the hole they have been digging
