There's not a minister in post who would get a similar role in the real world. And yes, he should definitely be sacked. But how many screaming howlers did Diane Abbott get away with? Our country looks like a frickin' circus.

it's not just been labour that is responsible for this, it's decades of allowing our armed forces to rot. However, it is the job of the current government to put it right with an immediate increase in defence spending rather than green power and illegal immigrants

i think it all stemmed from his embarrassment at the lack of resources available to him. We have war going on all around us, and this government is doing absolutely nothing to protect us. We are however, protecting the illegals at any cost

The current state of the Royal Navy:

2 aircraft carriers — neither operational.
6 Type 45 destroyers (our most powerful warships) — one operational (in Cyprus).
7 Type 23 frigates (less powerful, much older) — three operational
5 Astute class nuke-powered subs — one operational (in Arabian Sea?).

Surely those responsible for this appalling state of unreadiness (a national
embarrassment if ever there was one)— political, civilian and military —
should be fired/charged.

Their incompetence has effectively left us without a navy.
Quite an achievement for an ancient island nation.
