Default I cried when I lost X Factor to Leon Jackson, admits Rhydian Roberts

I cried when I lost X Factor to Leon Jackson, admits Rhydian Roberts
X Factor runner-up Rhydian Roberts is back... and admits that losing to Leon Jackson last year made him cry.

The Welsh warbler was favourite to win the show, but was beaten by the Whitburn lad and had to watch as his version of When You Believe became the Christmas No.1.

As Rhydian prepares to release his debut single and album, the 25-year-old admits he thought he'd be doing panto after losing to Leon.

He said: "On the day, I was pretty heartbroken.

"I actually shed a tear, so I must be a bad loser.

"I was drained at the end and then I was on ITV2 and Fearne Cotton was saying to Leon 'Here's your single'.

"I looked over and I saw my single there too, which was never going to come out now, and, at the thought of everything just slipping away, a little tear came.

"Afterwards, it was like, 'What now? Panto?' I didn't know what to do. That was scary. But the next day everything was rectified.

"Simon called and said, 'I want to sign you anyway.' "

Like Leon, Rhydian has also been away for almost a year and had to wait for the Scot's debut to be released first.

After Leon won, Rhydian was branded a bad loser because of claims fans weren't able to vote for him in the final.

And there could be some battles ahead as Rhydian shows why he should have won The X Factor.

But for the moment, he's just happy his dream of releasing an album has come true. And he could still have the last laugh.

When Leon's debut album, Right Now, was released last month, it failed to get to No.1, managing only No.4 behind rock heavyweights AC/DC, Kaiser Chiefs and Kings Of Leon.

Rhydian, who signed a s1million record contract with Simon Cowell, doesn't want to get involved in a war of words.

His main goal is about to be achieved - the release of his debut album, Rhydian, on November 24.

He said: "I think Leon is a great singer and person, his album has done great things in the chart and I can only hope to enjoy the same success - our music is very different so only time will tell.

"I didn't go on The X Factor to get famous, I just wanted a record deal.
We wanted to make something full of great songs, not just an X Factor tribute."

Rhydian's debut single, The Impossible Dream, will get maximum exposure when he sings it on The X Factor on November 22.

He said: "It's big and dramatic. The choir and the strings make your heart swell.

"It makes me quite emotional because this is what I have always wanted the opportunity to do.

"I really am living the dream."

As well as original songs, the album has Rhydian's X Factor favourites, including Bridge Over Troubled Water and West Side Story's Somewhere.

Of course, what was great about Rhydian on The X Factor was his big camp numbers such as Go West, his sequinned suit and his big blond hairdo.

A natural redhead, Rhydian is staying blond.

He laughed: "They say blonds have more fun. I think you make your own fun.

"I've had more fun than I did when I was ginger."

The Razz gives the lowdown on Rhydian

1 The Impossible Dream
Rhydian belts out this song from the musical Man Of La Mancha as if his very life depends upon it.

2 To Where You Are The baritone makes sure we all know his market - lovers of big, emotional Westlife-style ballads.

3 What If (duet with Idina Menzel)
A simple, soaring, surefire number one.

4 The Prayer Those who like Westlife or Daniel O'Donnell will lap up this cover of Andrea Bocelli's cover - but those who like music with some kind of beat will be switching off.

5 Bridge Over Troubled Water
Wringing every tear he can manage, Rhydian bleeds the Simon & Garfunkel classic dry.

6 There Will Be A Time This is where the album sags - too much emphasis on musicals and not enough rock theatrics.

7 Somewhere
A show-stopping tune from West Side Story gets the Rhydian big-bellowed sheen. He's got a big career in musicals.

8 Not A Dry Eye In The House At last, some rock bite - and a flamboyant cover of Meatloaf's classic.

9 I Believe
All the greats have tackled this - from Elvis and Frank Sinatra to Frankie Laine and er... Robson & Jerome.

10 I'm Coming Home Again
A touch of Welsh Celtic mysticism.

11 Who Wants To Live Forever

Rhydian tackles Freddie Mercury in this Queen cover. It's a fruity combination and an epic ending.
