Default Should there be a limit on the number of children you can have?

This is a contentious issue recently given the rise of environmental awareness corresponding with overpopulation and the economy.

In China there is already an example of this kind of policy: the One Child Policy, introduced to curb overpopulation in 1979. Estimates have it that without this policy, China's population would be 300-400 million higher than what it is today.

In a world where you can't jump on a plane without cries of "think about the carbon emissions!" is this something other countries should look to adopt?

Or is it immoral for governments to intrude on family life?

Interesting question Shauno. I dont think its right for Governments to put a limit on how many children people can have. China have got big problems with their one child policy and dont know how they can continue with it to be honest. But we should think about it really, the world is getting overpopulated and we should encourage people to have less children, especially them that cant even support them and rely on others to subsidise them.

isn't there supposed to be a direct correlation between education level of mothers and family sizes. I remember that in an article quoting W.H.O figures..... so maybe governments ought to focus on making education more accessible and more flexible for women rather than directly controlling who can and can't have children.

yeah ... here's a link ... wasn't the one I remember but here's a highlight
"Many studies have found a significant correlation between education and fertility - as literacy improves, fertility rates tend to decrease"

http://www.aag.org/Education/center/...on3_page2.html

Something to do with greater options... greater financial freedom... less dependant on the man.. better access to public welfare...etc

Fact is, European people are getting older and older while the third world countries have a much younger population so it's time to make babies ! We don't have enough young people in Europe.

And the environment issue is just an excuse because Earth is getting warmer and warmer, babies or not.

Babies generate body heat idiot. Body heat contributes to global warming. And global warming is the reason we're all gonna die, and the eternal battery containing Xenu will break, and the entire galaxy will burn in his wrath.

Yes there should be a limit.

Ohh and on average a plane will do better miles to the gallon than a family car, with how much used to how many it carries.
