some interesting points have been made about him- such as;

has he lost all his money
what does he have to gain by doing bb?
does he really want to be a celeb?

why are all his clothes brand new, catlogue stuff?

i think he was rich once, but lost it all i think he wants to the money because he has none left. I think hes a horrible, horrible man and i cant stand him!

I'm not sure about 'all of his clothes being brand new'. Makosi and some of the others were talking about his clothes a few weeks ago. They said that they were cheap and in a poor state of repair (I'm paraphrasing here, of course). And wasn't it on BBLB recently that they froze the picture to show a huge hole under the arm of the jumper that he was wearing? There's been another time when a similar hole was visible under the arm of something else that he was wearing, too.

He has said that he owned his own business, writing speeches for politicians, etc. He has been credited with doing so for William Hague, for example. And the late MP, Alan Clark, mentions Derek in his diaries which sold well and have even been dramatised by the BBC. He also had a conversation recently with Eugene, and said that he was a little worried that his involvement with BB may prejudice his future business interests. He said something about people being reluctant to call and offer him a place on the board of their companies. Okay, that could well be bluster on Derek's behalf. But it's also the kind of thing the media would've jumped on were it complete fantasy, too.

There was an article last week with comments from some of his friends about how he came to be the Derek we see now, although he was born into a working class environment. It wasn't too revealing, but it did go some way to explaining his interest in politics and his accent.

Derek Laud (born 1964) is a contestant in the sixth (2005) series of the UK Big Brother TV series.

Laud became a researcher working for Conservative Members of Parliament in the mid-1980s. He fought for a seat on Wandsworth council's Graveney ward in May 1986, but won only 937 votes. He gained some notoriety as the only black member of the Monday Club, which supported repatriation of immigrants and the apartheid regime in South Africa. Fellow members of the Monday Club nicknamed him "Golly", for gollywog, a nickname Laud continues to use. During his career, Laud has written speeches for several well-known Conservatives including Margaret Thatcher, Michael Heseltine and Alan Clark. He is also mentioned in John Major's autobiography. Moving on from Westminster, he was employed in the City of London in equity finance. He established a lobbying company Ludgate Laud in the early 1990s. As a parliamentary lobbyist he came to prominence during the cash for questions and 'cash for knighthoods' rows when he was investigated by Scotland Yard [1].

For the 1997 General Election, Laud was selected as Conservative candidate for the seat of Tottenham, but stepped down shortly before the election citing "business reasons". There was press speculation that this referred to Laud's drink-driving conviction in the US [2].

In 2001 he provided an alibi for his friends Neil and Christine Hamilton in their sexual assault case.

Laud had long been an enthusiastic fox hunter and in 1999 he became the first black Master of Foxhounds for the New Forest Hunt. His hunting activity was the subject of an anecdote told by Aldershot MP Gerald Howarth in March 2005. Describing Laud as "as black as the Ace of Spades", Howarth said that hunt saboteurs had challenged Laud claiming that 100 years ago, the ancestors of the other huntsman would have been hunting him, and Laud had responded by saying "100 years ago my ancestors would have been eating you." [3].

At the end of one of the Big Brother task's, Laud remarked, "I've been working like a black." 26-year-old model and Business Studies graduate Orlaith McAllister, another 'housemate', walked out of the series citing Laud's bullying behaviour as a contributory factor.

Derek is also a friend of the former Champion boxer Chris Eubank who also appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2001.
