Default NOW Magazine - 30/1/02

Anyone else seen this week's NOW magazine? It has a a three page BB spread entitled 'Is there life after Big Brother?'

It says - This summer another 11 people will volunteer to live in the national goldfish bowl otherwise known as Big Brother, as Britain's favourite reality TV show starts its third series. But what's happened to those who went before them?

There's a two page spread on what the BB2 housemates are doing, and one page on the BB1 housemates.

Some pics are the official BB ones, but others are quite new, and it gives quite a lot of info.

Would anyone like a transcript?

Right, here we go guys - Part 1!!

BRIAN DOWLING

Big Brother 2 champion Brian revealed to his parents that he was gay just a week before entering the show’s house. After winning, he lay low while coming to terms with his fame and even turned down a reported £50,000 offer from the Daily Mirror to tell his story. He’s now signed to power agents ICM and also has a year’s deal with Blaze TV working on various television projects. The first of these is presenting SM:tv with Cat Deeley. Brian, recently voted Britain’s sixth sexiest man, says ‘I’m thrilled to be working on a programme I’ve loved for so long. I even love the early morning starts.’

BUBBLE

Bubble, real name Paul Ferguson, is the cockney best remembered for sticking his tongue out at every opportunity, as well as weeping when he spoke about his daughter Briony in the house and talking openly about his previous drug abuse. He now has a lucrative career making personal appearances at nightclubs. He turned down the chance to do a show for Channel 4 at Christmas because they only offered him £100 – he opened a club for a £1,000 fee instead. Bubble has his own website www.allaboutbubble.com and landed his dream job as a presenter for football channel Chelsea TV. He says “I’m making money, meeting people, having a good time and I love it.”

ELIZABETH WOODCOCK

Regarded as the quiet mother hen of the house, Elizabeth is working behind the scenes in TV. She’s a programme developer and is also forging a career in journalism, having contributed to the Daily Express. She says: “I’m not interested in cashing in on my fame. It boils down to having a bit of dignity.” Last year, Elizabeth criticised Davina McCall for accepting an award for the show and not mentioning any of the contestants. She claimed: “It was a betrayal. We only got £30 a day inside the house and it’s been every man for himself since we left.” She’s now said to have split from lover Stephen Druitt, 57.

STUART HOSKING

With his suave good looks, designer suits and stroppy nature, dad-of-three Stuart was never going to last very long in the house. He’s still a business consultant, has a weekend slot on Buckinghamshire radio station Mix FM and contributes to Top Gear. He says: “I had fun doing the show, but I still have to work and pay the mortgage like everyone else. Doing Big Brother was surreal, but I wouldn’t do anything like that again. I missed my family too much.”
(Photo of Stuart with Penny)

PENNY ELLIS

The ex-teacher was the first to be evicted, even after dropping her towel to give viewers a full frontal. Penny recently finished in panto in Liverpool and has a Saturday show on London radio station Liberty FM. Her agent said she’s lad ‘lots of offers for this year’, but didn’t go into detail. Penny says: “I’m having a ball and I have no regrets. Things aren’t handed to us on a plate. I’ve worked hard. Giving up teaching was a big risk for me, it’s like starting over again.
(Picture of Penny with Stuart)

DEAN O’LOUGHLIN

The softly spoken Brummie recently married long-term girlfriend Vanessa. Dean resisted the parties and premieres circuit and instead returned to his first love, music. He’s currently on tour with his band Phony. Dean says: “I take the music seriously. I’m not going to jump on the Big Brother bandwagon and I’ll hold out until a deal comes along that’s right for the band.” He also ran an Internet shopping site with his new wife called www.giftsforgirlfriends.co.uk which he says was ‘for crap husbands and boyfriends who are clueless about what to buy their other halves.” Dean is good friends with Brian and says “Going out with him is like something out of Beatlemania. The reaction he gets is amazing.”

.................................. and Part 2!!

NARINDER KAUR

Geordie Naz didn’t hold back when it came to slagging off her housemates, although she grew very close to Brian. Naz did a week’s stint on Manchester radio station Century FM, as well as a parachute jump in aid of breast cancer awareness. She wants a career in entertainment and is waiting for any suitable offers. She’s also pitched her own TV idea and hopes to hear positive news soon. Naz has no intention of returning to her old job as a medical rep and says: “Big Brother has changed my life, but I worked hard for it too. It has given me amazing opportunities I wouldn’t have had before and you haven’t seen the last of me yet.”
(Picture is BB official photo)

AMMA ANTWI-AGYEI

Exotic Amma’s main Big Brother moment was her famous naked Jacuzzi session with Helen and Elizabeth. The former lap dancer landed a small role in Sky One’s football drama Dream Team. Now she admits she’s struggling to find work, but denies recent reports that she’s returned to lap dancing. She says: “I’m glad I did the programme. I don’t have a job right now, but I’m in and out of recording studios and trying to find acting work. The show gave me opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise had and I’m confident that things will pick up for me. I won’t go back to lap dancing. I enjoyed it, but that chapter is over.”
(Picture of Amma in pale blue top)

JOSH RAFTER

Josh still runs his agency finding accommodation for London’s gay community and it’s now branching out nationwide. He recently published an exercise book and has launched his own website www.joshandpecs.com Last year he strutted on the catwalk during London Fashion Week. He says: “I’m off to America soon to do a travel show. I’m lucky – loads of doors have opened to me. I’ve even been offered a pop career and I can’t sing a note. I turned it down, you’ll be relieved to hear. I’m now a patron for Crusaid and NSPCC and I’m glad that Brian and I were able to give gay people such a positive image.”
(Picture of Josh in shorts on the catwalk)

PAUL CLARKE

Paul has now returned to Ford to work as a car designer on a three-day-a-week basis. He still makes personal appearances at nightclubs and does store openings. He did one job for Channel 5’s Exclusive show, reporting from the World DJ Awards in Ibiza. He’s worked on TV pilots that have yet to be picked up. Paul and Helen are reckoned to have earned around £200,000 by selling stories of their romance to newspapers and magazines. They’re now house-hunting for their first home together in north London, so expect a glossy ‘at home’ magazine feature very soon. A spokesperson says: “He loves his cars and he loves his job. He’s very highly paid and returning to Ford is in no way a failure. He will continue with his promotional and TV work.”
(Picture is official BB photo)

HELEN ADAMS

Runner-up Helen is remembered for her dizzy outbursts and blossoming romance with Paul Clarke. Unbeknown to the couple, front page headlines were urging them to get it together, but they didn’t do so until after the show. The former hairdresser has a contract with Sky One’s Lorraine show which is due to expire at the end of February. She released her own dance workout video just after Christmas. Her former boss at hairdressing salon Classy Cutz accused Helen of letting her down, while her old colleagues said she’d forgotten all about them when she failed to return to her old job as a stylist. She says: “I’m just a girl from Wales and I don’t consider myself a star. I’ve learned who my friends are and I’m no longer in touch with the girls at Classy Cutz or my ex-boyfriend Gavin. I don’t know what the future holds and if it all ends tomorrow I’ll go back to teaching dance, which I love.

No major revelations, I think, but still an interesting read. Any comments?

I'll post the BB1 update in that section.

Indeed, not a lot of revelations there, but thanks VERY much for taking the trouble to type it up for us Kaz!

They're not very up to date on the house buying thing are they, surely P&H have been moved into their home for a while now? Confusing!

Thanks for typing that up Kaz. I saw it in the shop while I was waiting for a train, and hoped that someone else would have done it before I returned.

I've never been a fan of the journalistic talents of NOW, and they do seem to have just repeated a mixture of rumour and snippets from the news, but it is good that they've recognised there is an interest in what people have been up to and it merits a 3 page spread.

I didn't know about Josh and his recording contract. Thank God he turned it down! I didn't know he was off the The States either. Needless to say I'm annoyed by the inevitable bitchiness about Helen and Paul making money from the press when we all know they really could have made so much more from interviews if they'd chosen to do so. What else can we expect from the magazine that bought the horrible stories from Helen's former colleagues? I wonder how much they'd pay for the glossy at home feature?

At least most of the others seem quite positive, and able to set the record straight on things like Amma not going back to lapdancing. I'm pretty certain Liz must have split from Steve. I know it's always been rumour, but I'm sure we'd have had some kind of denial by now. The websites have been well advertised. I wonder if they'll get loads of extra hits.

I'm sorry - "Stuart - with his suave good looks" - please, I nearly brought my tea back up!

Article was good but didn't really tell us anything we didn't already know. It just shows though how much interest there is still in the contestants six months after the show finished.

I know! I'm not saying he's ugly or anything, it just implies that his good looks and designer suits had a role to play in people into voting him out. I know people (and the press especially) like to criticise, or put people down when they are jealous of them, it's just most of the others were good looking and paid attention to their wardrobe too.

Couldn't resist commenting on this quote from Elizabeth:

Quote:
I’m not interested in cashing in on my fame. It boils down to having a bit of dignity.
If she's not interested in cashing in on her fame, then why is she working in television and writing articles for the newspapers?

Also, it's a bit rich for her to have a bit of dignity now, when we've all seen her running naked into the sea!!

Thanks so much for posting this up Kaz, it saved me buying the magazine. I do wonder about these so called journalists sometimes. We could have done a better job than that ourselves. They've told us nothing new, have they. Money for old rope, or rather old re-hashed stories.

Can we have the update on the Big Brother 1 housemates, I've not got a clue what any of them are doing now!

I'd be mostly interested in Darren, Caroline and Anna
