Plates are what you get before you have your brace fitted they go on the roof of your mouth,I can`t remember having too much trouble with mine,I think it was irritating at first but then you forget its even their just like with the brace.I diddn`t find the plate uncomfortable and It diddn`t make my speach any different.
I had two teeth removed aswell before I got my brace and honestly it was fine,It diddn`t hurt it was just a bit scary as Id never had teeth out before and it is a bit uncomfortable until the swelling goes down but its not that bad, don`t worry about it.
The worst part of the whole brace experience was getting the actual brace itself,I hated it at first.I remember the night I got it I came home and cried,I thought I looked so awful with it.It hurts when you first get it in or at least it did for me and it hurts when you go back to have it tightened.I couldn`t eat anything for the first day without it hurting.I remember being in Mc Donalds at about 13 trying to eat chips and I couldn`t even manage them.
The good news is it is SO worth it,honestly. The pain goes away after 1 or 2 days and you can eat whatever you want again.Well your not ment to becuase my orthadontist said I would get stains on my teeth if I eat too much sugar but I diddnt listen and I was fine anyway.Im not saying don`t listen to him/her becuase I may have just been the exception in that I used to have pretty white and strong teeth anyway.Thats another positive my teeth and sooo white now and well as straight.I diddn`t even have particularly bad teeth to start with but it has made all the difference, noone wants to be the one with the dodgy teeth and you will feel so confident in photos and when talking to people once you`ve completed the treatment.I can`t stress how worth it is.After a while you get used to them and you will forget you even have them in honestly.Another thing is that people used to say they hardly ever noticed mine,I dont know if they were just being nice but w/e lol,I also had a long term bf while I had mine in and even he said he diddnt particularly notice them. Its best to ahve them now, infact its best to have them as young as possible,it will make you so much more confident and feel better about yourself, even if your teeth aren`t particularly bad.My smile is like my best feature now lol.
You wont get depressed, there will be other people in the same boat as you, everyone has braces at some point these days, its nothing to be ashamed of.You will forget they are there and so will everyone else-honest

Well, I have perfect teeth, not bragging but mine look exactly like they have had braces but i never did. So I cant give advice, but you will benefit alot from braces.

I had a lot of orthodointic work done on my teeth when I was in my early teens so can speak from my experience with the process somewhat I suppose.
I had 6 teeth removed followed by a removable brace which I had to wear for the best part of a year. After this I had train tracks for about 2 years followed by a retainer which I wore at night times until I was 18.

In terms of pain you shouldn't worry. The most painful thing I found was the first few days after visiting the orthodontist, the pain was never sharp and intense but numb/discomfort. Obviously having 6 teeth out in one go wasn't pleasant but you don't feel a thing.
In terms of food, I didn't change my diet at all but I could remove my first brace whereas you say you can't. Wth the train tracks though, as long as you take brushing your teeth seriously twice a day you can pretty much eat what you want.
With the talking lol, my first brace affected my speech quite badly but the trick is to keep at it and practice, you quickly get used to talking properly with it in.

Good luck
