Default Workers rights.

Well...I have to say im proud of the Libdems within the coalition for their stance on this issue..

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...s-7593585.html

quote:
Adrian Beecroft, a venture capitalist who has given £593,000 to the Conservatives since Mr Cameron became leader in 2005, recommended companies be allowed to sack unproductive workers at will.

This had full backing of the conservatives including David Cameron, but was blocked by the Lib dems.

Adrian Beecroft Is the chairman of the company who owns Wonga.com

Wonder how many other stories like this will come to light following the 'cash for access' expose?...

Whle I agree that companies who employ people should have the right to dispense with unproductive or badly performing staff, I don't think a blanket legislation is possible or fair.

Having said that,if I had a company, where one or more staff were lazy and did not do their fair share,or even do most of their expected work at all. Also if I had staff who were unruly and/or caused friction with other staff then I would hope to be able to bring their employment to an end quicker than through all the warnings procedures.

The dangers with the legislation proposed by the Conservatives would likely be that companies could just get rid of anyone as they wished within a certain time frame and that would be wrong unless there were really strong and undisputable facts as to their inability or suitability not to remain employed in the company.

Sometimes the Lib Dem conscience does surface still, overall I am glad it has on this issue.

Me too, as you say if they were merely lazy or confrontational all companies have Human Resourse Management proceedures that can be applied.
The worry is it could be used as a means to get rid of those returning from illness,or older employees.
It would be interesting to hear the views of ACAS on this topic
