hmm the words of someone familiar me thinks!!!!

I dont believe in National service myself, I think it takes away peoples right to have an opinion or to make a stand for what they believe in. Many people are opposed to war and would be very unhappy if made to fight for something they did not believe in.

Don't think it should be brought back personally, ok you hear people making comments about youths 'national service would do them good and teach them a lesson' and yes i couldn't agree more but at the same time everyone should have right to their own views and these days no one wants to see war.........................good little debate this.

If national service was re introduced in the u.k what kind of message would it send out to the rest of the world, surely it would be seen as mobilising a greater army to be used in an attack...on who now North Korea ...Iran or some other country George Bush doesnt like.

Society globely has had problems with their youth population, national service didn't work in the past ,and won't today.

I think the only solution(and its a long term one) is education.

Yeah I agree with that. However, I think that education would be better as it could actually enable them to get a decent job. Also like shaggy said if we do national service then it's telling the rest of the world that we are preparing for war which I'm sure that no one wants.

I suppose the thing to remember is that national service never worked in Iraq! they made them join up and then at the first sign of war they ran for the hills - you will never get a committed professional army from a group of people who are forced to do it. What you will get is a group of people counting off the days until they are finished their service.

Again to force someone to do this I feel is a restriction of their right to choose

Personally I dont think it should be brought back. I dont believe in making anyone do something they dont want to do. I joined up to the RAF when I was 17 and hated it. I only lasted 2 weeks.

God you lasted 2 weeks - I doubt I would last 2 mins - I am married to an ex squaddie and hated every minute of being "the wife of"

Some people have suggested sending "chavs" etc to military service, god forbid that they were the people responsible for protecting us during a time of war. I would rather have soldiers etc that have chosen their career, they are much more likely to want to do it!

I'm quite shocked I lasted two weeks too.

Sending in Chavs would be the worst idea possible. Like you said, you have to love the job you do and if you had someone who was made to fight for their country who didnt give two hoots then the outcome would be catastrophic

I suppose its a bit like your parents telling you to do something you really dont want to do - you will do it but you will not give it your all, it will always seem like a chore to you rather than something you jump into full of enthusiasm.

In the UK we not only have the current serving armed forces but we also have a huge list of reserves and TA who will happily step up to the plate if necessary.

It might do them the world of good but what use would it be to our country - and also who would pay for it I assume it would be "us" the tax payer who would fund something that would hardly be of any benefit

Completely agree with Sunny. From both a practical and moral/personal freedom point of view, it's just a bad idea.

National Service isn't the answer, need to toughen up schools. Corporal punishment, random body searches and mind control drugs are all policies I'd support.

National service is when there is compulsory service in the armed forces from a certain age for a set period of time. They still do it in a lot of countries but it has not been done here for many years.

I've got a better suggestion.

Instead of bringing the national service back, just open a care in the community project. The community being the local prison where they would become soap attendents in the showers.

That would teach then a few things about life, giving them a gun and training them up is only going to add to the problems!

No not atall, it's better kept away. 'Chavs who have nothing better to do' being put in the army, trained to be a soldier, getting free accomodation, meals and good pay for being useless nobodies just shouldn't happen IMO. Also, as people have said; these good for nothing chavs/people fighting for our country, would you feel safe that they're doing a good job?

I think National Service is best kept away.
