Default Eurovision: Is there any point James Fox going to Turky and picking up Nil points

Do not get me wrong, I voted for James Fox as well, but it would not matter who we picked.

Last year due to anti war feelings, the UK scored nil points at the Eurovision Song Contest. If we send James Fox across to Turkey, we will get nil points again and like Jemini his career will be blighted for life.

As we do not want that ignomony again, would it be better for James Fox's career and the honour of the UK if this country decided to withdraw from the contest until such time when a new Iraqi goverment can be formed and we can withdraw from Iraq?

We got nil points last year cos we were crap!

This year James has got a good catchy song and I don't think he'll be singing flat. I think he'll do really well!

GO JAMES!!!

The quality of the song and his performance is irrelevant.

He will get nil points because he is from the United Kingdom, who have been involved in what they see as an ilegal war and are an army of occupation oppressing the people of Iraq.

I can not see how any euro-judge would give anything to a UK entry. It is just not politically correct.

So that being the case, we should withdraw from Eurovision until we can withdraw troops safely from Iraq. What is the point of blighting the careers of British performers and subjecting ourselves to humiliation ?

I agree with all parties to some extent.

Last year's entry was utter crap and basically didn't deserve a point. Poor things though!

However, we wouldn't have won last year if we had put in bloody Westlife.

We will have to have an overwhelmingly catchy and classy number to win. I like James' song, rather cheesy for me though. He is a winsome lad though, and nice to see him so well supported by Alistair.

Good luck to him. Win or not, I hope it opens up some great opportunities for him.

Nice to see Malachi on BBC1 again! he's not at all shy is he?

I thought James was the most professional and confident of all the entries. Plus the song suited the contest. And he does have lovely eyes

Hope he does well. He is a lovely chappie. Met him the day I went to Newport and saw Helen. He spent ages with all the young kids who were there, signing autographs and having photos taken. Nice to Alistair supporting him.

GOOD LUCK JAMES.

The fact we were involved with the war in Iraq against the wishes of our European 'friends' AND our representatives couldn't sing a note in tune sealed our fate. But who cares. Stuff 'em, that's what I say. We have nothing to prove to the rest of Europe. I only watch Eurovision to listen to Terry Wogan's putdowns as all the songs are usually crap anyway.

Quite agree Andy. With the way the countries vote for their neighbours, political friends etc we never stand a chance.

So should James Fox have his career bl;ighted by the fact he will score nil points.

It would be better to pull out now citing "The recognition of political realities".

If he does not, it will be a stain on his career, and he might as well see if he can train as a plumber or something else other than singing. (Has anyone heard anything from Jemeni ?)

BTW a lot of european countries, like France and Germany did not want a war because they were trading with the Saddam regime and found it highly lucrative

He could always go back to doing movies again. I thought he was very good in Day Of The Jackal. Or was that his brother Edward?

I have heard that other countries consider the Eurovision to be the Olympics of song contests but it's only in Britain that it is treated with derision - because of the Wogan banter.

From the clip I have heard the song sounds like if it should be a Ronan Keating number.

I liked the song and think he will do o.k with it.
For many years the voting has always been political and that will never change with certain countries voting for each other but, at the end of the day it is an annual event and you either love it or hate it. Personally I love it, including Terry Wogan and his commentary. I must say though I prefered it when we used to have an established U.K performer as our entrant and then chose from 6 songs to decide what we wished for them to perform

I've never understood why us Brits worry where we finish up in a biased, politically-motivated song contest.

If we seriously wanted to win it, don't you think we'd be entering performers with a proven track record of song writing and record sales rather than the usual non-entities with no discernible talent? As I treat the whole contest with laughable contempt, I suggest a new appoach and send in failed ex-Pop Idol contestants as our entrants. How I'd laugh to see the guy with the gold suit who sang Tainted Love; the young scientist, James, who sang Great Balls Of Fire or, best of all, the girl with the vocal gymnastics trying to get her tongue around a Britney Spears song as any of our representatives.

Either that, or just withdraw from it altogether. The way things are going in the world of politics I don't feel very European anyway.

Now that's a good Idea
I only watch the show to hear Terry's commentary, he makes me laugh

We've tried this before and it doesnt always work. The problem with Eurovision is that it is Eurovision and there is no proven way to win. The voting is something that cannot be fathomed out.

Though possibly one of the Pop Idol rejects would just fit in what Eurovision likes LOL

Me too, Amy. Without Wogan it would be a very dreary affair.

Wouldn't it be great if one of the failed ex-Pop Idol contestants won! As you quite rightly point out, no one can predict how the voting works out so they all would have a chance winning.

It matters not who represents the UK

While Britain is in Iraq, we will continue to get Nil points.

We upset a lot of European countries who had lucrative trade deals with Saddam Husain

James Fox is going to be humiliated.

Be interesting to see how much air play James gets in this country - I hope at least he gets a hit here. He deserves it.

I hope our judges, for once, stop behaving impartial and being nice to our main European partners. Instead we should play by the real rules and not give points to any of those countries who upset us in the world of politics. Therefore definitely nothing for the French (banning our Beef, blocking our ports with strikers), Germans (excluding us from having a say in Europe because we wouldn't join the European Currency) or Spain (trying to take Gibraltar from us, overfishing in our waters). Stuff 'em all.

My prediction: We won't end up with nil points, but we won't win either.

James Fox was singing and being interviewed on Simon Mayo's radio show today.
