To be honest I don't know much on the subject other than it can kill you.

I certainly wouldn't want any of my friends or family to have it let alone myself have it! I feel bad for people that do have it.

We had a talk about HIV and AIDS in C.P once where a man came tell us about it it was interesting and we found out that he was HIV positive and we discovered his Dad hasn't spoken to him since getting it as he didn't agree with him being gay and thought it was god's punishment or something along does lines. I hear a lot that people suggest AIDS is God’s punishment for gay people which is rubbish in my eyes

very stipid, espically since the logic is flawed as more straight people have AIDS than Gay people.....

The Catholic church need to take responsibility in stopping this debilitating disease spreading across Africa.
Since most of Africa is Catholic they follow the churchs views on contraception meaning many of them do not use condoms because the pope has come outright and said he is against the use of condoms. This disease is spreading and unless the Catholic church come out and allow use of condoms it can only get worse

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).

HIV attacks the immune system's soldiers - the CD4 cells. When the immune system loses too many CD4 cells, you are less able to fight off infection and can develop serious opportunistic infections (OIs). A person is diagnosed with AIDS when he or she has less than 200 CD4 cells and/or one of 21 AIDS-defining OIs.

Common myth: "HIV doesn't cause AIDS."
Truth: If you don't have HIV, you can't get AIDS. If you have AIDS, you have HIV. There is 20 years of solid scientific proof on this. AIDS is not caused by party drugs, AZT, government conspiracies, or anything else but a virus.
HIV Transmission
HIV is only spread through the following body fluids:
Blood
Semen
Vaginal fluids
Breast milk

The most common ways HIV is passed from one person to another are:
Reusing and sharing needles
Unprotected sex
Mother-to-child
During pregnancy, during birth, or through breastfeeding

Sue when you post really useful information like that could you please post your source. We have to have a link when you copy and paste from another site to give them credit!

AIDS and HIV are terrible debilitating diseases, with all the amazing advances that are being made in medicine lets hope that one day we will find a cure. At least they can not manage to slow the progression from HIV to full blown AIDS with the right cocktail of medication.

As for the Catholic church taking responsibility well thats a whole other topic really. I am a Catholic and quite honestly I do agree that the church has a "CERTAIN" amount of responsibility but to imply that it is responsible for the widespread of HIV I think is a little much. Lets face it people choose to embrace which elements of their chosen religion that they can accept as appropriate. That said those in Africa choose not to use contraception, but choose to continue to have sex out of wedlock which is also against the beliefs of the catholic faith.

Not necessarily. The initial problem obviously starts with someone having sex out of wedlock, but the main problem is when a married couple (one with HIV) have sex, which then leads to a child that now has it.

Of course they need to embrace different sides of their religion - thus deciding which moral codes they want to stick to. Unfortunately many of them choose the current Vatican leaders stance on contraception and would rather contract the illness as opposed to going against it.

I wasn't suggesting that the pandemic is solely the Catholic Churches responsibility/fault - I was simply suggesting that as they have so much authority they need to take a more responsible role when condemning use of contraception.

I respect what you are saying Lauren and agree they do have a level of responsibility towards the people that follow the religiong so closely. With the new Pope in house I doubt that will ever happen though, he is very much old school thought and I think he likes the element of control that being pope brings!

I do think that as individuals that we all have a responsibility for our own health and that of those we love. Like I previously said I am catholic and would no sooner take notice of something that I thought could kill me, so it is about the choices we make.

I agree Education is key but you can lead a horse to water but how you going to make it drink when things have gone so far! Maybe instead of focusing on war governments should focus on healing the world. I personally think that the governments of the world are the ones who have the most power to do something to help those in Africa who this is a HUGE problem for.

I agree with most of your points about the major problem with it being in Africa, and they needing to take aspects of their religion while still keeping in their mind their own health. However, the powers they are living under are not allowing most of them to get free health care because of the religion of the continent (free condoms, contraception) and with the squalid conditions they're under they can't afford condoms - which is what is leading to (in my view) to a pandemic in Africa.

I just read my posts back and it does sound like I am putting a lot of blame on the Catholic Church - but I am just stating the amount of responsibility on them is high enough for them to maybe take a more liberal stance on such things as condoms. I understand that there are many other factors attributing to the pandemic.

LOL!
Hopefully the next one is a bit liberal, but I doubt he will be cos when Benedicts on his last legs he gets to "elect" a new one, as far as I know - he'll go for the old schoolies
