The animals we raise for meat now are treated appallingly as it is, without adding more to the list,I can understand her point though, but people cant be trusted with treating animals properly.

Princess Anne did not say we should eat horse meat. She said there should be some kind of debate about it because it could help ease the terrible welfare record we have with horses in this country. The same restrictions do not cover them that cover animals raised for meat.

But obviously, if you think she shouldn't have said anything simply she comes from a privileged background and doesn't look what people consider to be perfect despite the fact she knows more about horses than most... then that's your call.

I don't really get the mass aversion to eating horse meat.. We'll quite happily eat cows, pigs, sheep, lambs, deer, rabbits, fish, chickens, ducks, pigeon etc etc, but we are disgusted at the thought of eating a horse??
I've not personally tried horse, but apparently a horse steak is delicious.

I'm not aware of any welfare that other livestock are treated with. They are all treated terribly.

From what I've been told it's as leathery as old boots.

We have happy sheep around here.
They have the freedom of the moors and some Dales.
The cows look pretty happy as well.

This being a BB site, I am aware of what Germaine Greer said about it. She said livestock was treated awfully. And she was an unapologetic carnivore.

I am aware that is a BB site. What's your point?

Germaine Greer says a lot of things. I'm not sure that I agree with all of them.

If you believe that all livestock are treated appallingly then there's not much I can say to change your mind, as you seem to have put the shutters up. The truth is there's always room for improvement and there are always exceptions to any rule. However, standards have risen in the last few decades, and they continue to rise because people are demanding more ethically raised and slaughtered animals. Believe me... don't believe it... it's all the same to me.

As a veggie I don't have to worry about eating meat, but I still worry about their welfare some horrific stories come to light sometimes,I don't think any animal should be treated badly even if it is for the food market.Just treat them well and slaughter them humanely, that's all

People can turn a blind eye to cruelty when they are conditioned to look upon animals as livestock and food. They are treated like livestock, and subjected to neglect and outright cruelty, the kind of cruelty that would cost their owners huge fines and prison terms if the animals were dogs or cats or horses even.

Germaine Greer's argument was that she would not or could not subscribe to crusaing against animal cruelty, because she'd seen too much cruelt with farm animals. She'd given up the ghost, and was not going to become a hypocrite defending cats and dogs when she'd seen abuse, neglect and cruelty done to farm animals.
