I just cannot get my head around the idea of putting on so much weight and being so unable to do anything about it that you'd need a gastric band or equivalent... they don't even seem to work very well, I've heard of a couple of people that my parents know who've had the procedure done and they're still massive and still eat unhealthily...

I know someone who had gastric band surgery, she went from 17 stone to 9 stone I think and she has maintained a steady weight since then, she got it done in Belguim years ago.

The thing about a gastric band is that it's not some magic cure for obesity which I think a lot of people who get it done seem to think it will be, even though they're well aware that it's not. All it does is physically stops you from being able to eat and eat and eat, but you have to want to break the bad habit and be healthy in order for it to work... which from the couple of people I know about, doesn't seem to be something they've even attempted to do. They just got the procedure done because they thought it would help.

I have to say this will save money and lives in the long term, obesity can be lifestyle choice but also caused by stress, depression and trauma.
There has been a lot in the media recently and attitudes are changing.
If this becomes available on the NHS I hope it's for those who have a medical need and or are recieving counseling.

This is better than a gastric bypass I would think, as that's a 'whole life' thing... unless you decided to stretch your stomach, which would take some doing but it's possible :/
The balloon can be deflated and removed once a desired weight it reached. Then it's just a case of maintaining a healthy diet.
I agree regular motivational appointments with a dietitian and or counsellor would really help make the change permanent.

I agree with this. I would love to lose weight, but not this way. Sure, I'm rubbish at sticking to healthy eating, but it's the only way. Healthy food intake, with unhealthy stuff in moderation and regular exercise. A lifestyle change is the best way in my view.

I wouldn't even consider any of these weight loss surgeries, invasive or not.

Dieting for the lazy and can't be arsed. Here's a novel idea, work off more calories than you take in on a daily basis. Try it, see if it works.
