I have hypoglycemia, was diagnosed 8 years ago after an anophylactic reaction to an anit-biotic, the two were not related, just one of those weird co-incidences. Hypoglycemia is treated by diet, I have 4 small meals a day, with snacks in between if I feel the shakes coming on - hands start to shake, weird restless feeling in the small of my back - eat a bag of crisps, gets me sorted for a couple of hours until next meal time. Eating correctly stops you developing diabete's - the downside was I had to stop drinking not that I was an alcoholic or anything but I did like a few beers - but now for even one pint will bring on the shakes in double quick time. The biggest drawback for me with hypoglecemia is that you have to exercise more, due to the increased regular food intake, I am an inherently lazy swine, but it is very very easy to put on weight, for me I can control the shakes if I'm caught between meals with crisps or peanuts, but for others I know, this doesn't work, some need chocolate and the like. Its easier to get rid of the fat from a big bag of crisps or peanuts, than it is from a huge bar of galaxy or fruit and nut. Its not life threatening, it only requires discipline to keep it in check, which is why people like "celebs" get sob stories out there, go on and on and on like its cancer or something serious. Until it changes to diabetes it is not really that serious, and can be controlled and maintained with discipline and will power, yes her weight is going to balloon uo and down if she's not careful - thats symptomatic of the disease, but is cyclic and can be controlled if she takes care of herself properly, it only becomes a problem if she fails to control her intake and exercise. So when the fat stories start, its her own fault. |

but you can look on it as either a blessing or a curse. Its awkward, especially when you get the sicky shakes at 4AM say, which sometimes happens - more regularly in the beginning. But you need to take exercise to manage it because of the way you need to manage your food intake, I'm probably fitter than I've ever been in my life. Which in a way, no matter how grudgingly I go to the gym, is good for me Its not as if you have to go on strange diets, there are strange diets available - all co-incidentally requiring you to spend money to buy the books or attend the special clubs. Its just eating sensibly, small and regular meals with no blow outs, I still have the main evening meal with my family, I just don't have as large a portion - I have the kiddie size portion, then another one before I go to bed, in the mornings, Hobbit like, I have second breakfast .Theres plenty of support groups and my experience of other peoples tales is that whilst Hypoglycemia is fiddly to get used to in a management sense, though once your regime is set its really not that difficult, I get to eat snacks at meetings !!, I'd rather have this than full blown diabetes with its side effects and really serious possibilities. A disease that if you treat it correctly, can keep you fit as a side effect of the treatment - there is worse. |

Well, in 38 years as a nurse I have nrever met anyone diagnosed with a 'condition' called hypoglycaemia!
It's not a disease, you don't need curing from it. It just means 'LOW BLOOD SUGAR!!! It's a symptom. It means that you have not eaten enough for your bodies needs. The advice Spacbandit gives is sound. We should eat little and often and exercise. Some of us are gas guzzlers and need more food to keep going. Others (like me) are super economy models who need very little to keep them ticking over. That is the normal range of things. Nicole Richie's problems are nothing to do with this normal range. She has starved herself to super skinny, and her gut doesn't want her to eat anymore. She can easily revert from this by gradually eating more at each meal. If you don't have breakfast, then run around all day without stopping for lunch, then by tea-time you will have Hypoglycaemia. As soon as you put yourself on the outside of a sandwich, a glass of milk, a mars bar or anything else with a few calories, you will be fine. Don't feel sorry for this girl. She just needs a square meal or two, and something worthwhile to occupy her mind. Perhaps she could try a job, or some voluntary work. I suggest a spell with the VSO in sub-saharan Africa. If she still doesn't want to eat, she could hand out her spare food to the people there. They do. |
