This beautiful little creature is a piglet with six legs, which was born two days ago in Lianyungang, China.
In case you haven't spotted them yet, the spare legs can be seen emerging from the vicinty of the pig's buttocks. This is far from the first multi-appendaged animal the Metro has covered (many of them from China). It follows on from two previous Chinese pigs which both had two faces, a two-faced cow from America, and a six-legged cow from Colombia. Oh, and a seven-legged gender-bending deer in Wisconsin. Regular readers and Sinophiles will need no reminding that, this being the Chinese Year of the Pig, the birth of this pig is likely to be seen as a particularly good omen. Or a particularly bad omen. |

The recent barrage of two-faced (or otherwise unusually shaped) animals just won't stop coming.
Hot on the heels of the two-faced cow and the six-legged cow comes a new entrant in the odd animal hall of fame. But unlike the previous examples, which have been hailed by Metro (if, admittedly, not by anybody else) as a sign of the imminent apocalypse, the birth of this two-headed pig in China is being hailed as a miraculous conception by the farmers. |

I agree with Mark, its not nice to look at the pictures of them. Even though that first pig is still cute. |

Not necessarily "unfortunate" Markus. Just different. Just because it is not the norm, does not mean it is bad.

From todays Sky News
Experts are investigating after frogs with five legs were found in a river. Environmental agency Natural England said specialists were puzzled by the deformity. A spokeswoman said it was thought to be the first time such frogs had been spotted in the UK. Five-legged frogs have previously been seen in the US. The UK batch were discovered in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, by a member of the public. "It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has seen them," said the spokeswoman. "We are not sure what the reason is. A parasite; pollution - they are possibilities. But we've reached no conclusions." She said research in the US suggested the deformity might be caused by a parasite which attacks frogspawn and disrupts growth patterns. She added: "The frogs must be one or two years old, so whatever happened didn't happen this year." |

Stumpy the duck - who became famous around the world after being born with four legs - has lost one of its extra limbs after getting it caught in his pen.
Stumpy caught the media's attention worldwide after it was born at the Warrawee Duck Farm in the New Forest, Hampshire, on February 7. After catching one of its extra limbs in its special pen, Stumpy is now down to only three legs. However, the accident has led to a positive outcome for Stumpy, because now it can roam the farm free with the other ducks because it is no longer at risk of being caught in hedges, which could have put its life in danger. Farm owner Nicky Janaway said: 'He's now only got three legs and a stump, which means he's Stumpy by name and stumpy by nature. 'He got the leg caught in the pen fencing, he clean snapped it but he had no idea anything had happened so he may not have had any sensation in it. 'We whisked him off to the vet who finished off what he had started and cleaned it up. 'The good thing that has come out of it is that he can now roam the farm and he and his girlfriend duck Alice are harassing the others. 'It has given him his freedom because if he had got his leg stuck in a hedge like he did in the pen, I would never have found him. The other leg is tucked up so it has no chance of getting stuck.' Mrs Janaway said she was gobsmacked when she first turned Stumpy over after it hatched to find out its sex and was confronted by all those legs. She said: 'It was absolutely bizarre. I was thinking "he's got too many legs" and I kept counting "1,2,3,4".' The mutation is rare but cases have been recorded across the world. One duckling called Jake was born in Queensland in Australia in 2002 with four legs but he died soon after. www.metro.co.uk |
