Default Do housemates still need 'aftercare' from Endemol?

Endemol used to always claim that housemates got top of the range 'aftercare' after they came out of the show (which we all know is not true if you read Lesley Sanderson, Emma Greenwood, Chanelle Hayes or Nikki Grahame's accounts of what happened after they came out of the house), but do you think they actually need it anymore?

Housemates seem to be able to cope with the pressure a lot more now, and it's sort of like the press is no longer interested and it kind of feels like they can adjust quite easily to real life again (Lesley Sanderson from BB6 said a year after she went in she still hadn't recovered and re-adjusted to real life despite being in there for just 2 weeks).

Thoughts?

I think it's a dangerous show. This is why I will never partake in going OTT with my comments on housemates.

I could see how it could be very hard to adjust back into normal life, so I am guessing they will still receive aftercare, albeit the little they provide.

I think so.

They all at least meet with the psychologist when they come out but then depending on how they are won't need to see them again or will have more care.

However, Aaron's bitching after BB12 suggested they were all left.

Don't think they did it with BB12, some of the housemates tried to commit sucide

Really? That's awful.

Surely BB can be sued for this sort of stuff?

I don't think the aftercare was ever much good...in bb10 there were about 6 or 7 IIRC that tried harming themselves after the show?

Apparently (in Lesley's case) the psychologist was what messed her up. She apparently met with the psychologist immediately after her interview with Davina and she says they sat in silence and he just showed her newspapers with horrible headlines, then he told her to lie low for a few weeks and he'd access her (and her fellow housemates) in 6 months.

It is a shame, it's like they get the most out of the housemates and then discard them.

Loads of housemates have attempted suicide because of BB, even way back in Channel 4 days. Chanelle Hayes, Lesley Sanderson, Sree Dasari, Shabaz, Rodrigo.

That's awful. It's not as though she could lie low considering she was evicted early on and the series kept her profile up for another 3 months at least.

What did Chanelle Hayes do?

It is a shame because one of the most important parts of their care is assessing them BEFORE they go in to ensure they are strong enough to handle it. That obviously dropped by the wayside after the BB5 extremes.

She attempted suicide after Big Brother. I'm not sure if she was stopped or she had suicidal thoughts, I can't remember. Lesley from BB6 had the pills crushed up ready to overdose, it's just by chance her mother came home and stopped her.

I thought they spoke to a psychologist in the house now anyway, in the diary room? Just to keep them sane and in high spirits for the whole show.

I think Big Brother is only really a show you should enter if you're strong enough anyway. If I went in and felt like I was losing it at any point I'd walk.

Yes, I agree.

I also think that it's the show's duty to look after the housemates at least for the year following their series until the next series. The BB6 housemates (coming from Lesley) presumably only got the meeting with psychologist when they were evicted and then another 6 months later.

I mean, in some cases, the depression and suicide attempts didn't come until years after their stints in the house so there's not a whole lot of things the show bosses can do, but I think that they should care for them in the best way they can in the 12 months after their time in the show to ensure things like that don't arise a few years down the line.

What was the reason for Lesley's attempt? Was she getting stick from the public?

They used to cast a bunch of kooks and then cause them to have meltdowns for people's entertainment. Now they have a bunch of media *****s who are starved for the attention. The only worry for them is when nobody cares anymore.

true but with bb7 for which was chock full of vulnerables (bdd. octracized mentally ill gay muslim, Tourette's, anorexia, gender identity confusion, etc) the show apparently was a huge help for the majority of them. Pete said the show was his 'therapy', Sam brodie went from having an extremely troubled life to finding fame and true happiness. and this was partly down to the show even if he did have a **** time.. etc. only person who suffered even more from the programme was sadly shahbaz.

I'm pretty sure Grace wouldn't have called her experience positive after being glassed in the face.

Pete made money and got famous off it. Of course it was good for him.

Yeah, a year after she was still being called a bully and she had to wear really baggy clothes and hats when out to avoid being recognized.

I don't think she'd completely dismiss it either after she went on to continue starring on other reality shows and appeared on BB spin offs a good few times.
