Default 'That's so gay'

Offensive or not?

Whilst I PERSONALLY don't get offended by it, because i know as most people say it, their not going 'BEING HOMOSEXUAL IS BAD, SO THAT'S WHY I'M SAYING IT', I can see why some people would get offended.

It probably originated from what i said above and then just grew as a 'thing to say' without anyone actually knowing the meaning behind it.

It is wrong because if your going 'that's gay' at something that you don't want to do, then it is seemed as bad.

I've asked my friends this and they said they've just grown up saying it, and how it 'rolls off the tongue'.

Its not a valid reason to say something - but i think if people actually thought about saying it and the meaning that can come across to certain people as they say it that it wouldn't be said.

Thoughts?

Only a prejudiced person associates something bad with being gay.

I get offended

It's like saying "That's so Black" or "That's so Straight" it's stupid

I don't mind if a gay person says it that much but there making it more acceptable if they do

Not offensive in the slightest, to me anyway, but i don't really see how anyone can be offended by it in general, it's just a word.

I think im more offended at the fact that they DONT see whats wrong with it, rather than actually saying it.

Depends. If it's referring to something linked with or stereotypically attributed to gay people, like Elton John doing the can-can on a giant glittery phallus dressed in pantyhose and a bra, or is actually something gay, like two people of the same sex getting jiggy with it, then yeah. If it's just used as another word for 'bad', then of course not. There are billions of words in the English language, pick a better one.

Not really, that would be someone going out of their way too offend someone.

Someone saying 'oh that's so gay' because their xbox controller broke, to me, isn't offensive in the slightest, maybe a little stupid, but not offensive.

I think it all depends on the way it's said, like if someone went up to a gay couple in the street, snarling at them and said it, then yeah, then it would be offensive, because then it's more than just words, it's said with an intent to be hurtful.

I think its the opposite.
Someone going up to a gay couple kissing and going 'omg thats so gay' - is true! It is gay! It may still not be right as they are snarling and stuff.

But an XBOX controller breaking is a bad thing, and saying omg 'thats gay' because a bad thing has happened is worse imo.

I think it's a stupid term.

Find a better adjective that's actually in context.

So you're saying a silly throw away comment, is worse and more offensive than actual homophobia 'because it's true'?

I dont think its a throw away comment - but saying 'thats so gay' and being homophobic is different.

If your saying that then that dude was being homophobic when his controller broke...

They're kind of saying that being gay is okay to use as an insult when they say "that's so gay" but I don't think it means that the person is homophobic, and some people (like always) can go very OTT about how bad it is that someone says it.

Would I personally use it? No, but does it warrant being banned? Again no.

Okay so let me ask you this.

If you were walking through town someone dropped their phone and said 'ugh man, that's so gay' you'd be offended?

But would you be more or less offended if you were with a boyfriend and someone came up to you intentionally to hurt you by calling you gay and mocking you with it?
