Default Showmances / Romances

I make a thread like this every series I think but anyway, what is your opinion on showmances / romances in BB?

I personally cannot stand them and a few people have been pissed off at me in the past for airing those thoughts but I seriously can't understand why anyone would enjoying watching it...

My main point with how awful they are is that we tend to 'lose' the individual characters, once they pair up they stop being themselves or at least as much as themselves they show in the house, they lay around for hours cuddling, whispering, canoodling (see Nick & Jade) whatever and completely isolate themselves from the rest of the housemates, the viewers, the other housemates and BB then see them as a couple.

When they haven't exactly paired up already then we get bombarded constantly with the will they wont they garbage dominating the highlights (see Danny & Sarah), I think 90% of the conversations Danny has had with anyone in there since the launch is solely about Sarah and what she may feel about him.

Big Brother producers STILL after all these years seem to think that it's all we want to see and so push it constantly, dominate the highlights with it and basically take airtime away from the other more interesting things going on in the house.

Don't get me wrong, part of me being so interested in Big Brother all these years is that I love to watch the housemates reactions to different hardships and scenarios and how certain friendships and relationships evolve in the secluded environment but it's the whole way any showmance takes over the entire show that annoys me so much.

So what do you think?

if i had my way no showmances would ever take place in BB. especially on HL shows of any BB. they are just so dumb and cheesy with the music and all that bs. though i have liked some that were in showmances just not the showmances lol

Totally agree.I actually kinda liked Nick until he got sucked into Jades rectum. Also in the past there was a chance that it was maybe slightly genuine and part of as you say the real interactions of the housemates but these days it's like a tactic to further themselves in the game.People fall back on it these days as a desperate attempt to not be voted out.

I think its a good question. On balance I like them because they create additional interest and not just from the two involved. The buzz for myself when watching the show is attempting to work out if or when HMs are behaving in a normal way (allowing for the weird situation they are in) or if what they say or do is contrived and part of a plan.

So these showmances often cause confusion and interest RE the above.? The edits will often give plenty of time to them but this is a reflection of the public interest in same.?

...hmm, I'm not sure Mick...with other housemates..?..I think it could go either way in that if they show disapproval of the showmance and say it's fake..?..then that could be that they're worried about airtime themselves and so are definitely self aware of their actions in the house..?...or it could be that they see connections and non connections much more than us because we only see highlights so they pretty much know and feel the 'fake'...I can see what you're saying if it were livefeed but with highlighted shows only, I'm not sure that there is much interest in it for me...

Real or not guess producers have some obligation to show what's going on inside the house.

But know what you mean cos other night on C5 website twitter feed, wasn't there a piece about Danny and Sarah doing truth or dare with "proof of the kiss" or something ?

But don't think you can stop them really.
If it's real I'm interested in seeing the relationship develop.
If it shows HM's are fake I'd rather know than not know.

Think people (inside or out) will eventually get bored of them anyway.

I think people are all too quick to dismiss the BB romances as showmances now. Let's be honest it is going to be enevitable that relationships are going to develop in the house when you chuck in a group of young attractive single housemates who have nothing else to do with their time. I never really get the publics point that it is done for a game plan as it has been proved that there is no advantage for them having a "showmance" as people generally try to split the couple up so what would be the advantage in having one. I think, in certain situations they can be sweet and endearing ie Preston/Chantelle Helen/Paul. They built up over time and it was obvious there were real feelings involved. In others less so.

For me I evaluate if I think they are genuine or not before I would completely dismiss them. For this year I think that Sarah/Danny have zero chemistry. It was like the minute Danny got in the house he was looking around to see who he could get with. I have seen nothing to suggest that there is anything there romantically. Danny is just a dull character and it is his only hope of a storyline. As for Nick/Jade the less said the better.

Should showmances and romances be grouped together? Surely the latter suggests a potentially genuine liaison?

Anyway, once the girls are (inevitably) evicted by the mid-weeks we will be subjected, no doubt, to an equally tedious (BOTS endorsed) bromance!

it would make the game so much better if this was a fundamental rule - because the ones that are real will have difficulty and the fake ones wont even be allowed to waste our time so in my eyes its a win win win for BB if they make this a fundamental rule abd after-all BB can change the rules at any time.

Think "generally" is the key here.

Take Sally and Amy.
No romance but they can't be prised apart.
It makes them much stronger as 1 housemate.
If a couple ARE a real solid couple (rare) they'll be near untouchable IMO.

We might imagine it's all about winning.
But maybe it's about selling stories or just getting through it all.

I usually hate them, but Faye and Aaron And the Jasmine/Casey/Lee love triangle

I hate where it is day 2 and people are sniffing round each other like Danny and Sarah.

I hate romances/showmances/fauxmances/love triangles.
Anything of the sort. They always invade the highlights, and in some cases the entire series.

I even despised Helen and Paul, in BB2. And that wasn't even a showmance.
Urgh, so boring.

Can't stand them. It's boring to watch, I really don't care. I've never seen any showmance in a series that I was interested in, even if housemates I liked were involved. I get that sometimes genuine feelings will naturally develop, but it all just seems desperate if they're going at it constantly while on TV. It's not that hard to keep your hands off each other for a while. Also from a show perspective, it means that those housemates are only defined as being part of a couple instead of having their own personality and place in the house, and rarely get to see their interactions with other people and different situations. It's just a massive bore.

BB15's showmances were the worst. Even thinking of them makes me want to jump of a cliff.

Steven and Kimberly. (Filthy rodents)
Tamara and Winston. (**** back off to BB12, you knobs)
Mark and Christopher. (This one pretty much invaded the last 2 weeks of BB15, and turned it from insufferable to grave-dead)

I wouldn't call that a showmance. Yet.
But they are really close, and it is quiet boring.
