Default The world of a Gold Fish, cruel or kind?

Many of us have fish, usually "Gold Fish" and buy a bowl or a tank and watch them swim around and we get amazed

I don't personally get amazed, as I know that the water in a tank can go stagnant after a while and stink the house out.

The whole experience of keeping fish, whether Gold Fish or not, is pointless, but many do enjoy it and even talk to their fish.

Yes, it does happen?

1) Do you think it is cruel to keep Gold Fish or any other fish in a bowl or a tank?

2) Do you love Gold Fish or keeping any fish in a bowl or a tank, is it the ultimate pet?

3) How do you look after them and do you talk to fish

I like butterflies. Can you keep them as pets?

I don't think it's cruel because they don't know any better, and anyway, they're less likely to be eaten then. ^.^

However, I do think it's cruel to leave me have fish as pets, lol. When I was little, I had this weird obsession with prodding them with my fingers, just to see what they felt like. They were usually lucky though... they can swim quite fast, lol. >.<

A friend of mine in Austria has a pond/pool in his garden with semi rare fish you can jump in and really "swim with the fishes", they dont seem to mind that too much, (though rare fish seem to die if you look at them).

Rather have an Elephant though as an ultimate pet, or a duck billed platypus, always thought they were funny.

I think that a big Fish Tank is okay, especially when there is a small amount of Gold Fish or whatever.

But, when I see 5 fish in a Gold Fish bowl and it is left and left and not cleaned out, suddenly a fish or two dies, it is a cruel afair.

But I am not a fan of Gold Fish. Give me a Dog anyday

I heard that a goldfish has a memory span of about 3 seconds though, so all it has to do is swim round the bowl once and it thinks it's in a different place each and every time...

I think there is nothing wrong aslong as you look after them (clean and feed them and don't have them in a round tank.

This is an odd quote and may seem like a joke but it is true. It happened to my pet goldfish Jaws-Spandau (I was 13 and in love with the saxophone player).

My kids have asked for fish but we're sticking with wabbits for now. You can cuddle a bunny but not a goldfish.

I don't think keeping a goldfish is cruel. It depends really if you look after it well or not, like feed it often and clean the tank/bowl. But I do think it's cruel if a big fish is kept in a small bowl or something.

Iv'e had quite a few throughout my childhood some have lasted years, and some months. And I went through a goldfish phase when I was like 6!

The only one is alive now is called Emma and she's 11 years old and huge so we've always kept her in a massive tank.

Well... again, I'm gonna sound like a raging Psychologist here, but I've studied animal ethics in terms of psychology... and it turns out that fish actually feel pain and negative emotions (was a study done by Psychologist 'Sheddon').
However, if the tank is massive, and gets new things (like little cavey things)... I'd say it would be okay.

However, I have a fish phobia....
