Default Afghanistan: 5 RAF Crew Killed In Helicopter Crash

The Army are saying it was a weather balloon
that made it crashed.

http://news.sky.com/story/1567697/tw...licopter-crash

[The pair from 230 and 33 Squadrons died when their Puma Mk 2 aircraft
crashed while landing at NATO base Resolute Support in the capital Kabul.
They were among five people killed in the crash, while five others were injured.
A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Defence said: "The incident is currently
under investigation but we can confirm that it was an
accident and not the result of insurgent activity."]

Utterly sad, but infuriating at the same time. It is always tragic when anyone in the military loses their life in action, but to die in such an avoidable way as this is beyond belief.

My heart goes out to their families, and I hope - as Arista says - that someone now will ensure that 'Weather Balloons' cannot ever cause similar tragedies in future. Soldiers do NOT sign up to give their lives in such an unnecessary manner.

As unlikely as it seems we'll have to accept that explanation.

They seem to have trouble keeping these helicopters in the air.It almost seems like every few years one goes down.

Yes I would get the Fecking Weather team
to be driven out under Armed Guard
well away from my base.
I would give them Kevlar Chest guards to wear

I don't know, it seems so unlikely that A there was a weather balloon on the base flight path and B the pilot couldn't navigate a weather balloon.

If it was a night flight its possible the pilot didn't see it. Helicopter flight is inherently dangerous. I've travelled by helicopter probably about 100 times, and in that time, we ditched once and had 4 other dodgy incidents. Its much more dangerous than flying by fixed wing aircraft

I didn't realise this. I always fancied owning my own chopper even over a private jet, but this makes me think again.
