Default Are "gun free zones" the dumbest idea ever?

Alright, maybe not the dumbest but this doesn't make any practical sense at all. I watched this video from Venezuela which discusses how there are gun free zones everywhere but murders are way up and the country is in collapse (see below). Can someone explain to me how this actually saves lives? It seems to me that gun free zones not only strip law-abiding citizens of the power to defend themselves but it encourages criminals. How? Criminals, by definition, ignore the law so all "gun free zones" do is advertise that there is no one who will be able to resist them in that area. Where am I wrong?

But in countries like the UK noone is allowed to carry a gun, so we're effectively a 'gun free zone', and yet our gun-related crimes aren't as bad as some other places where civilians are allowed to carry guns, so that suggests to me that Venezuela's murder problem, and the country being in collapse, isn't caused by, and wouldn't be solved by, getting rid of gun free zones. It's a difficult one because it's hard to deny that criminals might view gun free zones as 'advertisements', but at the same time I think that the argument of 'if criminals are going to carry guns then everyone should be able to', and legislating based on that, is never going to bring about any long term changes, which is probably the aim of this. If the only two options are 'gun free zones' or 'allow everyone to have a gun' then personally I don't think gun free zones are a bad idea.

Venezuela is one truly ****ed up country but that reporters rant on Burny Sanders hard line socialism and how Burny will turn America into "THIS," is someone who has very little knowledge of Venezuela's communist totalitarian state run by leaders aligned to Fidel Castro.

The only way they could enforce it in a country like that is metal detectors or searches.Guns are part of life in those South American countries. They need to either enforce it fully in those zones or risk leaving people defenceless. The UK is not comparable as guns are'nt part of our culture. If i lived over there i'd have a room full of Ak's and Uzi's.

In places where guns are legal, I don't think a 'gun free zone' is going to stop anyone from committing the crime they are planning. I never really thought about it like that until I read something a while back.

Quote:
Some have a hard time accepting that criminals can be deterred from committing crimes. They don’t believe that potential mass shooters have second thoughts when faced with the prospect of armed citizens who can fight back. They seem to think that everyday Americans can’t help stop attacks.

But it is getting hard to ignore that mass public shooters keep choosing to attack locations where victims can’t defend themselves. It’s little wonder that gun-control advocates resort to desperate tactics.
