im not really scared now but i wouldnt go when i was younger as i was born with epilepsy and my mum was wary on me having injections but a year ago i went to have a tooth out through the nasty pain i was suffering with and when the dentist knew i was epilepsy she just treated me with care and it was ok

I love the dentist! O__O I've never understood why people are /scared/ of the dentist, they're only trying to help, unlike daddy long legs' which are the most pointless creations around and ONE IS FLYING AROUND MY HEAD.

But yes. Try not to be nervous, and I always find trying not to laugh at the dentist's nose hair's a great distraction!

ah as long as it went well DT. My hubby is terrified and has to have sedation when he needs any work done at dentist. He smashed his front teeth last year so needed extensive dental work which terrified him. All good now though so no worries xx

Im scared before going in usually
I had to have a filling, and a extraction
all I had was laughing gas, so I was wanting to laugh while one of my teeth was being taken out by pliers
weird..

I don't mind the dentist. Try not to go mad brushing your teeth before hand becuase if you have a cavity it's not going to help. The only thing it does is inflame your gums and make them bleed.

I used to have a terrible fear of dentists until I met a wonderful one called Sean. I must also say he was private and so very very expensive!!!! He quelled my fear by injections of vallium.

Some years later and I've moved away from Sean and he has now retired and lives an a lovely big house after obviously making a stash of money from people like me. I found a new dentist and used to go regularly but in the past couple of years I've stopped again and I know why.....I have a tooth that is troubling me and it really needs the dentist to take a look at but I'm stopping myself from going. Even this MORNING I was in tears because my husband had to cancel my daughter's appointment as she was due to go with him and her brother but as our dentist is private (as most are now), they will not make a new appointment for her unless she comes with ME!

So what do I do and what is my fear about?
Is it embarrassment? Partly I think, but it is more to do with the injection that numbs your gum, It freaks me out.
I am really scared about this all over again but do not want my children to see my fear.

Oh wiglet, thats such a shame, and when you are having problems with a tooth you know you need to go get something done about it.

My hubby likes you shares your fear of the injections into the mouth which is why they sedate him before beginning any work. Our dentist is a NHS dentist believe it or not but is very good. I do pay for some things to be done though, like if I need a filling I pay the top up for it to be white so no-one sees it.

My hubby is not as bad since he had to have the months of work done last year, he was there every week for a couple of months after an accident bless him!

Wiglet why not just go sit in the waiting room for 5 mins, no appointment, just go in, sit down and see how you feel, if you manage that you are a step closer!!

Sunny,

My dentist understands my fear and has even said he will give me the 'magic jell' that he aside for children. The waiting room is a calm place and normally the dentist's huge black labrador is asleep on the floor and stroking him is even more calming!
Everything is in place but then I also have this other stumbling block that I do not think this dentist is good enough so as you can see I am putting as many hurdles in the way as possible.

Because this dentist is private, check ups are every six months where as NHS check ups tend to be every nine months any way. My daughter does not have anything wrong with her teeth and does not even have a filling which is not bad going for a 14 year old who loves sweets and junk food!
More excuses for me not to take her...........This time.

I had some Gel on my teeth, when work was being done, the drill didnt hurt one bit, neither did the extraction, also they use laughing gas, which makes you happy

I had a good dentist, really nice guy. But then he was charged with malpractice for carrying out shoddy work on peoples' teeth.

I don't think he was struck off in the end but he was suspended. He'll probably retire now. He was an NHS dentist and possibly he was snowed under with work to do.

The only time I've been scared of the dentist, understandably, was when I went to have 6 teeth out in one go Apart from that, I never am cos every time I go he takes one look and says there's no problem lol.

I hate going to the dentist. I am a real softy and when that needle goes into my gum, ready to freeze me up, I cringe and pull some really horrible faces. My eyes being kept tightly closed. I actually pinch my leg hard and try and divert the pain. Someone told me that once, but it doesn't help too much, but it does help a bit, [I think?]. My dentist is great and knows me well and is very understanding. My girlfriend came in with me one day and she has lovely teeth, unlike myself, so she doesn't need any work. Anyway, when she saw my facial reaction to the in-going needle, she just walked out into the waiting room and left me to suffer.

My next appointment is in October, OUCH!!
