My reading of it is that Richard realised he'd been outgambitted on the eyeballs gimmick, but realising that a spark had been lit re: Caroline's suspicions of his character, was content to fall back on a more traditional method of playing the game, i.e., leaning heavily into his butter wouldn't melt persona, knowing full well it'd drive the highly impulsive Caroline mad and cause her to attack him further and make him look like the victim. A bullshitter knows a bullshitter imo. They've both played their respective games really well. None of this is to say I think Richard's a total fake btw. Just that I think he's out to win and is tactically emphasising certain spects of his character in order to further tease Caroline's negativity out.
