It's possible to have both. I've personally never spoken to anyone from the internet on the phone, but it's just another way of meeting somebody, nothing remotely sad about.

whats the point in paying to speaking to someone you dont even really know who lives on the other side of the country when you can speak to them for free online?

If it's landline then you aren't neccesarily paying. And you can't have the same conversations on the phone that you could online.
Plus, it's their money, if they want to spend it speaking to each other, they obviously get on well enough to do so, so what's the big deal? And I don't see how it's sad either.
