Actually I have seen a type of toaster which would fit Jon's requirements. (A time delay on the second slice of toast) It was in a hostel in Kent in 1990.
Instead of slots the bread was put on a conveyer belt / chain and each slice was passed through the heating elements. If you put bread on at regular intervals you get toast coming out at regular intervals (Stating the obvious). This incurs the time delay required.
