The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess has admitted that the band used "a novel way" of taking drugs during their heyday.

Writing in his new autobiography Telling Stories, the rock singer says: "We discovered the process of blowing coke up each other's arses. There, I have said it. It's not like we invented the practice but I realise now it's not an everyday thing for most people."

Going on to describe the practice in detail, Burgess elaborates: "Not every member of The Charlatans took part in this highly-charged ritual, which has been described as having 'a Manhattan-powered doughnut'.

"I was a giver and receiver. They say giving is better than receiving, but believe me, in this case the giving is not that great."

The Charlatans had three UK number one albums and 17 Top 30 singles, often being linked to the 'Madchester' and 'Britpop' music scenes.

Telling Stories is on sale through publisher Penguin from April 26, with tickets available for 'An Evening With Tim Burgess' in London, Manchester and Newcastle.

In the revealing book which unveils the inside story of the band, including the death of keyboardist Rob Collins in a tragic car accident in 1996, Burgess states: "You stick a cone pointy-end first into the participant's anus, aim your straw into the cone and blow sharply, like firing a dart from a blowpipe.

"Then wait for it... yes! The participant jumps around the room as if someone has rubbed a fiery chilli on the spot."
