Default Wii U sales up 666%; 2nd biggest Mario Kart launch

Mario Kart 8 has boosted weekly Wii U console sales by 666% in the UK.

82% of new Wii U customers purchased one of Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 console bundles, which launched alongside the game on May 30.

Nintendo's latest racer is the second biggest-selling Mario Kart title at launch, and the best-selling week one Wii U game.

It entered at number two in the UK all-format gaming chart, behind Ubisoft's record-breaking new release Watch Dogs.

The game's success comes after Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the fate of the Wii U could be changed by a single title.

Mario Kart 8 has sold more than 1.2 million units over its first weekend on the market. Released worldwide on May 30, the racing game is now the fastest-selling Wii U game.

Mario Kart 8 features anti-gravity racing, 12-person online multiplayer, Miiverse support and 'Mario Kart TV', an in-game channel packed with highlights and game clips.
