The husband of a 9/11 hero has returned his wife's Woman of the Year award after Caitlyn Jenner was given the same accolade.

Moira Smith died during a rescue mission, after entering Tower Two in New York several times to evacuate people inside. Later that year, Glamour named her Woman of the Year posthumously.

But James Smith was insulted by the idea of a transgender person receiving the prize 14 years later.

In a Facebook post, he complained about Glamour's decision and made a point to refer to Caitlyn as "Bruce", using male pronouns.

"I was shocked and saddened to learn that Glamour has just named Bruce Jenner 'Woman of the Year'," James wrote. "I find it insulting to Moira Smith's memory and the memory of other heroic women who have earned this award.

"At a time when we have women in the armed forces fighting and dying for our country, heroic doctors fighting deadly diseases, women police officers and firefighters putting their lives on the line for total strangers, brave women overcoming life-threatening diseases... the list of possibilities goes on.

"Is this the best you could do? I can only guess that this was a publicity stunt meant to resuscitate a dying medium."

Glamour said that it stood by its decision to honour Caitlyn.

A spokeswoman told the New York Post: "Glamour's Women of the Year Awards recognise women with a variety of backgrounds and experience."

What an arsehole. What gives him the right to return his wife's accolades because of his own bigotry? That's more of an insult to his wife's memory than anything else.
