EastEnders have held talks with Kate Oates about taking charge
Quote:
IT is not long ago that soap boss Kate Oates was axed from Weatherfield – now she could be on her way to Walford.
I can reveal that she has met EastEnders chiefs to discuss heading up the BBC show.
In her two years at the helm of rival show Coronation Street, Kate was credited as the driving force behind some of the soap’s darkest ever storylines. These included the grooming of Bethany Platt, serial killer Pat Phelan’s reign of terror, David Platt being raped, and the suicide of Aidan Connor.
Some of it was a little too grim and grisly for diehard Corrie fans but it seems the East-Enders bosses were impressed. A source at the BBC said: “Kate went in to meet up with bosses earlier this month and they seemed to really like her.
“They love what she did with the recent Corrie storylines, such as the suicide of Shayne Ward’s character Aidan. They would love Kate to bring some gritty drama to EastEnders. It’s still early days but producers are quietly hoping Kate will now decide to get on board.”
If she does head to Albert Square she will be taking over from former executive producer John Yorke. He stepped in on a temporary basis last year after producer Sean O’Connor quit amid falling ratings less than a year after he had started on the soap.
