[Telefonica, the Spanish owner of O2 in the UK,
has confirmed that it is in talks to merge the business with the cable and broadband giant Virgin Media. A combination of the two would create a business with annual sales of more than £11bn and tens of millions of UK customers. O2, which sponsors the England rugby team and the music venues of that name, boasts more than 34 million connections to its network.
