[Australian authorities are to euthanise scores
of false killer whales left suffering
on a beach after a mass stranding
in remote Tasmania.

Marine experts said today that they have
given up hope of rescuing the
oceanic dolphins after they were found
on an exposed surf beach yesterday
afternoon.]


[The department said there were 136 survivors
on Wednesday morning, down from 157.
That assessment was then revised down
to 90 within a few hours.]
