Jeff Bezos orders Washington Post to support ‘free markets and personal liberties’ Billionaire owner fuels fears of editorial interference following Trump’s election Jeff Bezos has ordered The Washington Post to support “personal liberties and free markets” in a major shake-up of the Left-leaning newspaper. It has always been a Democrat paper. The billionaire Amazon founder, who bought The Washington Post for $250m in 2013, has drawn scrutiny by claiming it would no longer publish any viewpoints opposing these two principles. In a note to staff, Mr Bezos said: “I’m confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. “I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion. I’m excited for us together to fill that void.” David Shipley, the veteran opinion editor of The Washington Post, has stepped down in the wake of the overhaul. The newspaper is now searching for his successor. In his note on Wednesday, Mr Bezos wrote: “There was a time when a newspaper, especially one that was a local monopoly, might have seen it as a service to bring to the reader’s doorstep every morning a broad-based opinion section that sought to cover all views. Today, the internet does that job. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business...nal-liberties/ |
