Default \"The real Big Brother\" - Is it time to reclaim our privacy?

With News Paper reports like this one below appearing in the international press is it time we took a stand and reclaim our privacy from the nanny state?

Quote:
Absolute Control of the British Population
The citizens are being threatened with the old days of the “Iron Lady”, who then insisted on the total control of the British population.

According to Daily Mail, plans for massive “tapping” of the whole population of the United Kingdom, are destined to be “a step too far for the British way of life”.

The Cabinet proposed the recording of every phone call, monitoring all emails, every SMS message, internet search and online purchase in a fight against terrorism and other criminal acts.

Information Commissioner Richard Thomas said that the traditional freedom of the people is under serious threat from state surveillance.

“Whatever the benefits, would such a scheme amount to excessive surveillance? Would this be a step too far for the British way of life?” asked Thomas.

The surveillance scheme would enable the police or MI5 access to the exact time a telephone call was made, the exact number that was dialled, the length of the conversation, and in the case of mobile phones, the location of the device with an accuracy of 100 meters.

There are also the details of when an email was sent, who the sender and receiver is.
Richard Thomas’ warnings prompted fighters for privacy, that claim that such power by Big Brother will enable total control over the citizens and their personal data.

It is obvious that Great Britain is returning to the times of Margaret Thatcher.

Also, there is a fear of sharing data with foreign governments, like when the United States requests the data of every airplane passenger, that can easily be handed to somebody that can use the information to their advantage.
