Climbing the steps: Researchers used electrochemical stimulation to restore voluntary movement to rats, but it could be decades before humans can receive such treatment
"Swiss researchers have discovered a medical breakthrough which could allow paraplegics to walk again.
Rats with severe spinal damage have been taught to walk, run and even climb after treatment with chemical stimulants and electrical signals applied directly to the spine.
The research opens up the prospect of repairing the human spinal cord.
It's unknown when the treatment will be ready for use on humans, but the key researcher says we are on the edge of a truly profound advance in modern medicine."
