Exclamation Last.fm users' passwords leaked online

Quote:
Last.fm has confirmed that a number of its users' passwords have been leaked online.

The music-based social network is the latest site to be hit by a cyber attack, following Linkedin and eHarmony.

Linkedin confirmed last night (June 6) that around 6.5 million of its encrypted passwords had been posted on a Russian hacking forum.

Dating service eHarmony meanwhile has announced that 1.5 million usernames and passwords had been leaked.

Last.fm posted an official message on its blog to explain that it is investigating the leak of "some" user passwords, and advised people to change their passwords immediately.

"We are currently investigating the leak of some Last.fm user passwords," the blog post read. "This follows recent password leaks on other sites, as well as information posted online. As a precautionary measure, we're asking all our users to change their passwords immediately.

"We strongly recommend that your new Last.fm password is different to the password you use on other services.

"We're sorry for the inconvenience around changing your password; Last.fm takes your privacy very seriously. We'll be posting updates in our forums and via our Twitter account (@lastfm) as we get to the bottom of this."

It is currently unclear whether the attack was made by the same people as the other sites, or how the information was hacked in the first place.
