Seeing as we have thousands pass us by every year, seeing as 2 passed recently and one struck russia causing huge damage....considering mainly the asteroid 150 foot long travelling at approx 18000 miles an hour missed us by just 17000 miles (from here to america and back) we can see farther into space than ever, yet no one discusses the most crucial aspect of all , whats the plan to protect us seems ? if we have no plan Id ask whats the point of even studying them ?

what worries me is no world leader said anything about it?

Here's a typical example. In 2028, the asteroid 1997XF11 will come extremely close to Earth but will miss the planet. If something were to change and it did hit Earth, what you would have is a mile-wide asteroid striking the planet's surface at about 30,000 mph. An asteroid that big traveling at that speed has the energy roughly equal to a 1 million megaton bomb. It's very likely that an asteroid like this would wipe out most of the life on the planet

It's difficult to imagine 1 million megatons, so let's try some smaller sizes. Let's say that an asteroid the size of a house crashed on Earth at 30,000 mph. It would have an amount of energy roughly equal to the bomb that fell on Hiroshima -- perhaps 20 kilotons. An asteroid like this would flatten reinforced concrete buildings up to half a mile from ground zero, and flatten wooden structures perhaps a mile and a half from ground zero. It would, in other words, do extensive damage to any city

I hear scientists talk about it, but Ive yet to hear our leaders tell us what are we planning to do to stop it?

Ive heard some vague talk about using gravity to deflect it with explosions in space, but really its all very vague. Its pretty worrying really. we have 20,000+ nuclear weapons capable of destroying the world 1000 times over.....but when it comes to using wepaons to save the planet, we are silent

ok back on topic, do any of you know more on the topic? what exactly would we do and is it even possible to somehow prevent an asteroid striking us?
