It's the elephant in the room that no one really wants to mention for fear of being branded racist... but, I'm afraid Gina's make-up / hair / contacts routine is very clearly and specifically designed to make her look "less black".
Why? Who knows. I don't think she deserves to be hated or insulted for it, it's actually quite sad that she feels the need to do it and is so insecure and uncomfortable with her natural appearance. Her guard is completely stripped away without the mask, and that is when she REALLY started to hate Hazel. When it was taken away from her.
It's so important to her that she's completely ruined her skin with it; people think she wears so much make-up to cover bad skin but it's very probably the reverse. Her skin is a mess because she has been clogging it heavily with make-up day in, day out for years. The same goes for her hair - it looks awful before she has a chance to spruce it up for the day... because it's fake and a mess.
She probably "naturally" looks absolutely fine, and wouldn't look so (frankly) shocking first thing in the morning if her beauty regime was concentrated on enhancing and making the most of her own features. But, it's concentrated on diluting and hiding them. So when that layer is stripped away it has a dramatic effect.
