People always tend to look at the past with rose tinted glasses just like people imagine the 50's as a time where housewives took care of their husbands and there were no violence, people could leave their doors unlocked and gays were perverts.

But the 50's WAS like that, if you missed it then you missed a lot. Leaving doors unlocked may have been cos nobody had anything worth nicking but public spirit was amazing. Everyone helped each other unlike now where 'everybody can go screw themselves'.
