What kind of local slang is spoken in your area that other people wouldn't know?
I'm from Aberdeen, people speak Doric up here and in the surrounding area... aye = yes aye aye = hello I da ken = I don't know far = where; far ye gaan = where are you going fan = when; fan ye aff = when are you going fa = who; fa's at = who's that fit = what; fit like = how are you foo = how; foo's yer doos = how are you (literally means how are your doves.. LOL) fit wye = why; fit wye's at noo? = why's that now? loon = boy/son quine = girl/daughter toonser = someone who lives in town teuchter = someone who lives in the countryside crabbit = bad tempered clype = someone who tells on someone else/to tell tales grippy = miserly swick = a cheat, to cheat sook = suck up bosie = hug bonny = beautiful, good looking fine = good, tasty rare = great scunnered = fed up greetin = crying wheesht = quiet; hud yer wheesht! = be quiet! gype = idiot glaikit = senseless, stupid bide = stay, live; far div ye bide (or) far d'ye bide? = where do you stay/live? bowfin = disgusting foosty = something's gone off dreich = dull and rainy; it's affa dreich iday = it's very dull and rainy today skelp = smack, slap; at loon's got a puss like a skelpt airse = that boy's got a face like a smacked arse oxters = armpits; mind an shave yer oxters = remember to shave your armpits peelie-wally = off colour and ill looking dirl = spin, to spin; he dirled her aboot idunce floor = he spun her about the dance floor etc etc... |
