Default Learn to Twerk! University course specialising in the study starting in summer

Quote:
[with inspiration from Miley]
The 21-year-old is a "lens into cultural conflict," according to course leader Professor Carolyn Chernoff

Twerking just got serious with the launch of a university course devoted to Miley Cyrus.

The former Disney star will be studied by sociology undergraduates at an art college in New York.

The course, called The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media, begins at Skidmore College this summer.

Professor Carolyn Chernoff said she was inspired to launch the course by discussions about twerking after she played a clip from the MTV Video Music Awards while teaching a course in youth culture.

She said: "I showed that video to my class, and the students had so much to say."

The 21-year-old Wrecking Ball star will be used as a jump-off point for explorations of gender, race, class, economic status, identity, fame, sexualisation, oppression and power.

Skidmore junior Layla Lakos, who is studying sociology and philosophy, laughed when she first heard about the course - but believes it could be enlightening.

She said: "You can study a lot of things based on Miley,

"She represents how transient wealth and fame can be, and shows how possible it is to change your image."

Prof Chernoff added: "Miley is sometimes seen as a wild, terrible she-beast.

"After the VMA performance, this young woman was seen as the end of all times."

Prof Chernoff added: "Miley is a lens into cultural conflict."

Wonder what the course requirements are?
